Bobby Buckheit's decision to travel to Lehigh from his home in Myersville, Md., was influenced by more than the university's national ranking as a premier research institution.

"Both of my parents went to school there," says Buckheit, a double major in molecular biology and history. "I'd always known about it because of their experience, but I wanted to make my own trail when I started looking for a college. Then, when I visited, I instantly fell in love with the school. It was the perfect blend of strong academics with the social atmosphere I was looking for."

He also found avenues for personal expression, a chance to develop leader ship skills and a Student Affairs staff that helped him find his niche.

"Everyone I've met in the Dean of Students office has been extremely helpful and supportive," he says. "They're all genuinely concerned about how well you are doing both academically and socially. I can say beyond a shadow of a doubt that it's not a front or a facade. They really do care about the students at Lehigh."

Buckheit joined the men's soccer club team, serves as president of Sigma Chi, is an orientation coordinator for the 2007-08 academic year, joined Phi Eta Sigma, the Order of Omega and the National Society of Collegiate Scholars.

Between his challenging academic workload and numerous opportunities for personal growth, Buckheit has found his passion for social interaction is paving the way for success beyond college.

"My tie at college is that I've gotten involved with many organizations that I'm truly passionate about," he says. "When you finally find the activities you can feel proud of and enjoy doing, it makes them so much more rewarding to you. That's one of the most impressive things about Lehigh—it really lets you grow as an individual and define your path."

His experience, he says, is not unique.

"There is an activity out there for anyone, as long as you have the desire and the dedication to go out and look for it," he says. "As a result of what I've been involved with, I think I'm better prepared for life after graduation. I'm not sure where life will lead me, but with the foundation Lehigh has given me, I'm ready for any challenge."
