An Invitation: Faculty Development Seminar on Social Justice and Diversity in the Classroom

This fall, a small group of Lehigh faculty will have an opportunity to participate in a faculty seminar focused on Social Justice and Diversity in the Classroom. The purpose of this seminar is to support faculty who are interested in learning more about teaching courses that promote student understanding of social justice and diversity. If you are considering making a curricular change, testing out a new pedagogy, or learning about how to approach sensitive topics or situations in your classroom, this seminar will create an opportunity for you to do so together with your peers.

2/9/2010: Council for Equity and Community adds new members
The Council for Equity and Community (CEC), an advisory group to President Alice Gast and the university’s senior leadership, has five new members as a result of campus-wide elections and presidential appointments. Four original members are rotating off the CEC.

2/9/2010: Talent show raises money toward 20K goal
The Vagina Monologues talent show raised awareness of domestic violence and sexual assault and a portion of the group's $20,000 final goal on Friday in Lamberton Hall.

As a reporter for WFMZ-TV in Allentown, Jaccii Farris believes in practicing objective journalism. She seeks to remain impartial, state the facts and not get emotionally involved. But Farris found it almost impossible to remain detached when she traveled to Haiti after the January 12th earthquake.

2/5/2010: Students debate connotations of interracial dating
Andrea Espinoza, '11, remembers living in New York City, where she once witnessed a black man walking with a white woman. For three blocks, every single black woman stared at him. She said it wasn't uncommon for strangers to yell at or even chase couples down the street.

2/2/2010: Ghana service trip offers student chance to combat maternal mortality
When Caroline Kusi ’11 agreed to participate in an annual service trip run by Becton, Dickinson and Company (BD), she joined more than just a group of healthcare industry workers. Recognizing the burning need for global health initiatives worldwide and the lack of vital health infrastructures in developing countries, she quickly became part of a BD team committed to "helping all people live healthy lives."

1/29/2010: Former Congressman recalls MLK
William H. Gray, former U.S. congressman and former president of the United Negro College Fund, concluded the 10-day celebration of Martin Luther King, Jr.'s life at Baker Hall Tuesday night by painting an unvarnished picture of black history in America.

1/29/2010: Sexual assault study concludes no one's talking
The Center for Public Integrity, a non-profit, nonpartisan and independent digital news organization aiming to produce original and investigative journalism, conducted a nine-month project on the systematic handling of sexual assault on college campuses and released the findings in December.

1/26/2010: Offensive mark found in elevator, destroyed
A hateful and racist symbol was discovered by a Lehigh employee in an academic building last week, as publicized in a campus-wide e-mail from President Alice Gast.

1/26/2010: Haiti relief effort started, semester goal to be $50K
The Community Service Office has launched a fundraising effort to benefit the survivors of the earthquake that destroyed much of Haiti. The disaster struck near the Haitian capital of Port-au-Prince at a magnitude of 7.0 on Jan. 12.

1/25/2010: Elie Wiesel to deliver commencement address for Class of 2010
Eliezer “Elie” Wiesel, the prolific author described as a “messenger to mankind” by the Nobel Peace Prize committee, will deliver the address at Lehigh’s 142nd commencement ceremony on Monday, May 24.

1/21/2010: Incentives aplenty for employees to buy a South Side home
By combining a new federal tax credit available to first-time homebuyers or long-time homeowners with the benefits offered by Lehigh’s newly revised mortgage incentive program, faculty and staff can save money when they buy a home on Bethlehem’s South Side.

William Herbert Gray III, a retired minister, former U.S. Congressman and former president and CEO of the United Negro College Fund, will deliver the keynote address at 7 p.m. on Tuesday, Jan. 26.
