Collegiate Men & Women: Saint Joseph 's University vs. v. Delaware , Lehigh, Drexel by Dave Highhill Following a long week of Spring break training, the Hawks began their 2K sprint season this past Saturday. Facing dropping temperatures and rising Schuylkill waters, Lehigh's teams fared well against Delaware , Drexel, and St. Joe's. The Novice Men's 4 began the day with a strong showing, finishing 1 st , beating Delaware . Perhaps serving as an omen, the rest of the men's novice boats followed suit. Both the second and first novice 8's had their bows cross the finish line first ahead of quick Delaware and Drexel crews. The Novice Women had an exciting start, leading a very strong group of St. Joe's and Delaware crews. Unfortunately, an over the head crab gave the lagging crews a chance to gain ground. The women showed great resolve and battled back and finished in 4 th . The Varsity Women's 4 race pitted two Delaware crews, St. Joe's, and Lehigh. Gusting winds and choppy waters caused clashed oars on the starting line which resulted in a re-race. The women fought hard and finished in 3 rd . The troubled starts continued into the Women's 2 nd Varsity 8. While turning to approach the starting line the officials called for the start. The women started down but still rowed hard, and finished in 3 rd behind Delaware and St. Joe's. Things went better for the Varsity women following their clean start, they braved the windy conditions, rowed a very competitive race, and finished in second ¾ of a length behind St. Joes. The Varsity Men took the Novice Men's lead and finished successfully. The men fielded two strong 4's which swept their race ahead of Drexel and Delaware . The Men's 3 rd 8 won their race holding back quick Delaware and Drexel 8's. The Varsity 8 finished off a successful day beating Drexel , Delaware Heavyweights, and Delaware Lightweights by open water. Lehigh Crew can be spotted next week on the Schuylkill battling a fast Villanova team. Check the website for directions and the next races. Races will run from 9:00-10:30AM .

Lehigh completed the rowing season this past weekend at the Intercollegiate Rowing Association National Championships (IRA's) in Camden , NJ . This year Lehigh was accepted in the men's four without coxswain and the women's lightweight eight.
The men's four raced to a fourth place in heats on Thursday behind Harvard (1 st ), North Carolina (2 nd ) and Brown (3 rd ). This sent Lehigh to the repechage (second chance) race on Friday where they placed third ahead of Michigan to advance to the second level finals and finished 12 th overall.
The women's eight had a solid race in the heat but finished in 5 th place behind Princeton , Radcliffe , Ohio State, and San Diego State moving them to the second level finals. In the finals Lehigh started of tied for third but quickly moved through Marist. At the thousand meter mark (half way) Lehigh called for a power move that had them drive a full length to even and then nearly a full length ahead of San Diego State . Their second half surge gave Lehigh a second place finish and eight overall.
The team would like to thank everyone for their support throughout the year. We wish everyone a great summer and look forward to seeing you all in the fall. |
