Newark, DE – Lehigh University’s Men’s and Women’s crews kicked off the fall season on Saturday versus the University of Delaware. Rowing downstream on the Christina River with overcast skies and a swirling tailwind, the Mountain Hawks looked strong all day. Despite a delay due to a historic pirate ship, the Kalmar Nickel, traveling down the middle of the river, the Varsity and Novice Crews handled the conditions, distractions and delay with poise and confidence. Head Coach, Paul Savell, saw success early as the Varsity Men’s 8 cruised to a 36 second victory over Delaware, with Lehigh’s B and C boats close behind. Lehigh’s V8 was led by freshman coxswain Jack Muskett and stroked by Phil Bresnahan with 7 - Todd Mickelson 6 – Joe Loguidice 5 – Dan Rogers, 4- Chris Hause 3 – Mark Chandler 2 – Phil Snyder and Bow – Kyle Miller. The Varsity Women’s 8 race followed the men’s race and proved to be a relentless 16 minute battle with the Delaware women barely edging out the Lehigh women by .11 second. Sarah Michaels coxed the women’s eight with stroke - Alix Howie 7 – Diana Philapova 6- Emily Marshall 5 – Christine Porcaro 4 – Denise Julian 3 – Kaitlyn McCracken 2 – Becca Guzman and Bow Ellen Sweet. Lehigh’s 2nd and novice women’s eights had greater success, beating Delaware’s 2nd 8 by 57 and 26 seconds respectively. Lehigh will see Delaware again as well as many other crews when racing resumes October 14 at the annual Navy Day Regatta on the Schuylkill River in Philadelphia. Lehigh’s Women made a strong statement to league foes with 6th, 4th, and 2nd place finishes for the day. The Women’s 8’s followed the men, and once again, the Women proved themselves against the strong field, finishing with a time of 15:40, good for 6th place out of 14 schools; The University of Pennsylvania won the Women’s Collegiate 8 with a time of 14:55. Earlier in the day, Lehigh raced three 8’s in the Novice Men’s race, and two 8’s in the Novice Women’s race. Cambridge, MA - The Lehigh University Crew continued their strong rowing this past weekend in the 42nd annual Head of the Charles Regatta. Not only is the Head of the Charles known world wide for the extremely high caliber crews who attend annually, but for the 3 mile race course consisting of sharp bends and small bridges which often result in tumultuous collisions for inexperienced coxswains. Strong head winds and falling temperatures challenged rowers in Saturday's races with Lehigh entering boats into the Men's Collegiate Four and Club Four events. Lehigh's Club Four with coxswain John Wertan, stroke Dan Rogers, 3 - John Young, 2 - Kyle Miller, and bow Mike Kelly, started 19th in the 32 boat staggered start. Making up ground on the field they finished with an overall time of 19:08, good for 11th place. Lehigh's Collegiate Four was the next event with Lehigh beginning in the 3rd position (from last year's 3rd place finish) in the field of 28. The Four finished 9th and secured a guaranteed entry in next year's race, with a time of 19:05. Colgate won the race for the second year in a row with a time of 18:12. Lehigh's College Four consisted of coxswain Felipe Luisi, stroke Mike Flanagan, 3 - Tim Matthews, 2 - Jim Quigley, and bow Travis Eisemann. Luckily for rowers and spectators alike the wind died and temperatures rose for Sunday's championship races. Lehigh raced boats in the Collegiate Men's and Women's Eight divisions. The Men raced first and rowed a strong race with freshman coxswain Jack Muskett steering an excellent course for stroke Phil Bresnahan, 7 - Todd Mickelson, 6 - Chris Hause, 5 - Mark Chandler, 4- Dave Kenyon, 3 - Sam Anderson, 2 - Joe Loguidice, and Bow - Phil Snyder. The Eight finished with a time of 15:49 in 11th place in the large field of 62 boats. The Western Rowing Club from Canada won the event with a course record time 15:08. Coming off a strong start to the fall racing season, the Lehigh Women's Crew worked to make a statement in Lehigh's final race of the weekend. The race proved extremely competitive, perhaps more than expected, as the women finished in 17:55, 14th out of 58. The small overall time difference between Lehigh and event winner Yale University, guarantees the Women an automatic bid for next year's Head of the Charles. The boat consisted of coxswain Sara Michaels, Stroke Alix Howie, 7 - Diana Philapova, 6 - Emily Marshall, 5 - Kaitlyn McCracken, 4 - Denise Julian, 3 - Christine Porcaro, 2 - Becca Guzman, and bow Li -Ping Chew. With collegiate races over the Mountain Hawks cheered on former teammates, Jon Winter and Dave Highhill. Jon, class of 2006 and member of the US Under-23 National Sculling Team, finished in 18th place in the Championship Men's Lightweight Singles race with a time of 19:19. Dave, also of the class of 2006, coxed the women's lightweight four from Undine to victory. Lehigh races again next Saturday when they compete at the Head of the Schuylkill, in Philadelphia.
