The Lehigh Crew team traveled to Philadelphia on Saturday, October 25, 2003 for their annual entry in the Head of the Schuylkill Regatta. As in previous years, Lehigh undeniably made its presence known to the thousands of spectators and fellow athletes at the 2.5 mile competition through its number of shells in the race and impressive finishes. Lehigh entered fourteen eight-man crews in six different events, with everyone, from freshmen novice rowing in their first meet to some of the crew team's first alumni, pulling hard and joining in on the fun and competition. On the men's side, three full eights of freshmen competed, with the best crew finishing sixteenth out of thirty-seven, just one second ahead of Columbia University , and well ahead of rivals like Lafayette and Temple . The men's JV eight, 3 rd eight and an alumni boat entered the Club 8 contest, with the best finish registering nineteenth place out of thirty-five crews, with a promising nine seconds on Drexel's JV, fourteen on Delaware's JV, and twenty-six on Villanova top varsity eight.\ Lehigh's first V8+ placed sixteenth in Champ 8's, in a strong time of just 12:47 , well ahead of George Mason, Delaware , and Loyola. The women's team garnered very strong results in their three events, beginning with the freshmen women in the three Novice 8's, all of which walked through crews in their push to the finish line. The best boat had an amazing first competitive piece together, and finished in sixth place out of forty-two crews, ahead of powerhouses like Georgetown , GW, Army, Temple and UConn. Three more Lehigh 8's were in the Club 8's race, the JV8, 3rd eight and alumni eight. Each boat, including the alumni boat, placed well among the thirty-one crews in the event. The JV8 boat was third off the start and walked through both UMass and UConn to have its bow cross the finish line first and record a fifth place time of the 31 entered including promising wins over Rochester, Holy Cross, and Temple. In the Champ 8's, Lehigh packed the shore to cheer its varsity eight women onto a fifth place finish out of eighteen teams, eleven seconds off first place and a time that was a commanding twenty-four seconds faster than fellow Patriot League competitor and sixth place finisher, Holy Cross. The Head of the Schuylkill was a great day to showcase both the history and the future of the Lehigh Crew team, and the undying pride and loyalty of its athletes, coaches, and supporters. The team is very excited to return to Philadelphia on November 8 and face many of its favorite fall rivals in the Frostbite Regatta, 2000 meter sprint races of six boats across where the winner takes all . . . Lehigh will take all. |

This past weekend, the Lehigh Varsity Crew Team traveled to Boston to race in the fall season's premiere rowing event. The Head of the Charles Regatta twists and winds its way down the Charles River, through six bridges over 3.1 miles, against the most competitive crews in the world. This year, Lehigh sent four school affiliated boats, including last year's winning women's eight, to see where they stand amongst national competition. The Lehigh Varsity Women's Eight placed fifth in the Collegiate Eights, against top college crews, to earn a guaranteed invitation to compete again next year. In route to their fifth place finish the varsity women's eight posted faster times than all other Patriot League schools as well as standouts like U. Penn, Dartmouth, Northeastern, Georgetown, and Fordham. The Women's Club Eight also competed very well, in their first showing at this prestigious race, finishing 27 th out of 47. A Women's Club Four also rowed, finishing 26 th out of 50. It is a true testament to the strength of the women's team to send twenty rowers and three coxswains to this world class invite-only event. The men's team also had a strong race, finishing 22 nd out of 40 teams, beating Drexel, University of Delaware, Boston College, and many other crews that they often race. Another rower on the men's team also competed in the club singles event, unaffiliated, showing well his first time on the Charles River. Overall, Lehigh has a lot to be excited about. More boats were accepted this year than ever before, and boat teams continue to improve. Next week the entire varsity and novice teams will compete at the Head of the Schuylkill Regatta, another exciting and competitive event, on the Schuylkill River in Philadelphia. Lehigh finished the day with men's and women's champ 8 races and the women were edged out by LaSalle to place second. The men pulled a brilliant piece, finishing thirty four seconds ahead of LaSalle to add one more gold medal to Lehigh's count for the day. The Lehigh Crew team completed its fall campaign on Saturday, November 8, on the Schuylkill River in Philadelphia. The team made its annual appearance in the Philadelphia Frostbite Regatta, named for its placement at the end of the season, and emerged victorious on this blustery day. Lehigh entered fourteen shells in this 2000 meter sprint competition, designed with individual heats in which the winner of each takes home a gold medal, as Lehigh was able to do on multiple occasions. The novice men began the day with a very strong showing in their first attempts at a short, intense race. Two sets of men competed in fours, with a notable twelve second victory over rival Delaware's first crew. In the eights, both boats took impressive second place finishes, chasing Marietta in both heats. The men crossed the line with sizable margins over some of the best of Pennsylvania rowing; Drexel, Bucknell, Lafayette, and LaSalle. The varsity men had a very successful day of competition. The first MJV8+ found themselves almost a full length down on Temple and trailing by open water to St. Joe's coming into the 500 meter mark, but opened up into a brilliant sprint to finish three seats ahead of St. Joe's and well inside Temple's shell. The MV8+ also placed second, less than three seconds off of Ithaca, after pushing back with just 600 meters to go, and registered a blistering time of 5:47.3. Lehigh's novice women sparkled on this 2k course, registering two third place finishes, one second place finish, and one shiny gold medal (or nine of them!) The 2WN8+ had a sensational sprint as they gained some seats on the boat that will become their consistent fall rival, St. Joe's, and beat American and Bucknell's A and B boats. The first WN8+ gained at least a boatlength on Temple in their biggest power move, the classic Mountain Hawk 20, and crossed the line first in a time of 6:29.5 to earn the first of what will be many gold medals they are sure to bring back to Bethlehem this year. Finally, in the most notable women's race, the first WV8+ blew away the rest of their heat to win the gold in a time of 6:58.4, nearly ten seconds ahead of Loyola, the closest competition. This was a great end to the season for the consistent boat that led the dedicated women's team this fall: C-Megan Vasta, S-Helen Roche, 7-Brady Garrity, 6-Cara Skola, 5-Laura Fonte, 4-Hannah Maxwell, 3-Colleen Furey, 2-Kristen Accaioli, and B-Katie Stiles. Frostbites set the tone for a sensational spring sprint season and pumped the team up to work hard over the grueling months of winter training to come. The team will return to the water for their winter training trip in Indian Harbour, Florida in January, and then kicks off their first official championship season as a varsity sport in March 2004.
