Lehigh Crew had its start in the spring of 1988. Ed Feitzinger had never rowed, but had always wanted to in college. Tom Flynn had rowed in high school and missed the sport he loved so much. During their search to start a team, the Dean of Student activities suggested that they combine forces. Together, Ed and Tom formed the Lehigh Crew Team. Without funding or equipment, the team started practices. A dedicated group of over twenty students practiced on land, while the team began looking for support.
A parent stepped forward and donated enough money to purchase a shell and the University Bookstore and other parents donated enough to purchase a second shell. In the summer of 1988 the club's purchased two boats from LaSalle High School in Philadelphia. Lehigh Valley Rowing Association allowed Lehigh Crew to use space in their converted pump house in Easton, PA. Lehigh Crew started competing in the fall of ‘88. The next spring the team won their first medal in the Marist Invitational for the Women's Novice Four. Throughout the following years the team continued to grow. In the spring of ‘98 Lehigh Crew moved into its brand new boathouse in Allentown. The new facility was a huge step in the continuing progress of the team.
In the fall of ‘98 Lehigh Crew was lucky enough to take on Paul Savell as the new head coach of the team. Coach Savell's experience and enthusiasm has helped bring the team to new levels in an incredibly short period of time. In the fall of 2002 the Varsity Women's 8 won the team's most prestigious title to date, first place at the Head of the Charles, in Boston, MA. The Women's Crew team officially turned from a club to a varsity team in the Fall of 2003.
Lehigh Crew has grown to nearly 100 members and trains year round including a training trip to Florida during winter break. During the winter months the team can be found erging in the newly renovated Grace Hall on campus. The team has evolved into a powerful presence in collegiate rowing and works daily to improve their standing in the years to come.
