Since its inception in 1981, the Martindale Center has sponsored many programs and activities aimed at increasing understanding of the structure and performance of the U.S. economy and its relationship to world economic developments. The Responses to Globalization program seeks to increase understanding of the leading role the U.S. has assumed in integrating financial markets, production of goods and services, labor markets, technology and information on a global scale. By encouraging discussion of issues related to globalization from a wide spectrum of perspectives, the Martindale Center seeks to promote understanding of the complex global processes influencing current economic and political developments both in the U.S. and throughout the world.

This interdisciplinary volume will bring together experts in European politics, economics, business, and foreign affairs to consider Europe's role in the global economy. The interdisciplinary Responses to Globalization undergraduate seminar introduces students to the writings and ideas of the speakers in our Responses to Globalization speakers series. This one-credit seminar meets biweekly throughout the semester and features special seminar meetings attended by our invited speakers. By bringing them face-to-face with some of the leading scholars writing about globalization today, students gain a unique, in-depth understanding of the vital, complex processes associated with globalization. These students are designated Martindale Student Affiliates and are invited to attend special events hosted by the Martindale Center. Student affiliates are drawn from various university departments, are nominated by faculty and are selected based upon their academic background, achievement and interest in the subject.
