Microfinance Club

Overview

The Microfinance Club was initiated at Lehigh in the Spring of 2008.  It is approved and recognized by The Student Senate and is a member of the Lehigh Global Union.  More than 75 students joined the club in its first year of operation.  The major academic affiliation of the club is with the Microfinance Program in the Martindale Center for the Study of Private enterprise.

In the first semester of its existence, the Microfinance Club brought several speakers to campus, including Mercedes Benavides (Women's World Banking), Kevin Clawson (Reach the Children, Inc.) and Ira Lieberman, former head of CGAP.  The club also collaborated with an NGO "Alice Visionary Project" (Kenya) by fundraising events which will boost the organization's ability to engage Kenyan women in microenterprise opportunities.

Ongoing activities of the club will include bringing future speakers to campus, project involvement with microfinance organizations, holding events and conferences with other campus groups, and taking field trips to New York and Washington, DC, to visit microfinance organizations.
