PROGRAM OVERVIEW
This twelve-day, non credit-bearing, service-learning opportunity is designed to develop the intercultural competency of all participants by fostering an understanding of cultural similarities and differences in regard to sexuality and gender and by building a knowledge base about queer and ally people and communities in Iceland. The program will be working with the Queer and Ally Community Center in Reykjavik. Students will have the opportunity to visit with the President of Iceland and his wife, the Mayor of Reykjavik and qeer and ally leaders in Iceland. The program also includes visits to the Blue Lagoon, Northern Lights, Viking Museum, Queer History Walk and Government Building and Political Landscape Walk.
There is no "coursework" per se as this trip is not formally connected to an academic class. However, students will be given some pre-trip reading materials regarding the socio-political landscape of Iceland to discuss as a group. Discussions will take place in six weekly, pre-departure, group meetings. While in-country, students may be expected to participate in a Lehigh on Location and video blog. Upon return, there will also be three follow-up meetings.
