PROGRAM OVERVIEW

Lehigh in London is a four-week Summer Program designed to integrate the dynamic urban space of London into six credits of Humanities coursework.  ENGL 195, Literary London, will consider numerous literary works based around the geography, architecture, landscape, and art of London; we will study works by Virginia Woolf, Joseph Conrad, Charles Dickens, T.S. Eliot, Amy Levy, and Ella Hepworth Dixon. We will then complement our literary work by engaging many of the sites and scenes of these narratives as we attempt to understand the cultural context of the stories.  ENGL 395, British Visual Culture, 1750-the present, will examine the changing visual technologies and aesthetics of British culture, including the rise of photography, narrative painting, the emergence of cinema, and the modernist art movement.  We will pay careful attention to the visual effect of different styles and techniques, especially the political and historical importance of varying artistic representations.  We will make regular visits to prominent museums and galleries, including the British Library, the British Museum, the Victoria and Albert Museum, the Royal Geographic Society, the Wellcome Trust, the Tate Modern, the National Gallery, and the National Portrait Gallery.  All members of the London Study Abroad program will receive an iPad to use during the month-long trip as part of our coursework.  This technology will be particularly important to our study of visual texts, including photography and cinema, and we will also use the iPads to help engage and study the geography, urban planning, and architecture of London.
