Dr. Jeetain Mittal appointed the Dolores T. and William E. Schiesser Faculty Fellow

Dr. Jeetain Mittal, Associate Professor of Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering has been appointed as the Dolores T. and William E. Schiesser Faculty Fellow.

Dr. Jeetain Mittal joined Lehigh University in 2009, after a two year postdoctoral fellowship at the National Institutes of Health in the Laboratory of Chemical Physics. He received his PhD from the University of Texas, Austin (2007), his M. Tech. degree from the Indian Institute of Technology, Kanpur (2002) and his B. Tech. degree from Punjab Technical University (2000), all in Chemical Engineering. Dr. Mittal’s research group focuses on several interdisciplinary research problems in biophysics and soft matter including intrinsically disordered proteins, macromolecular crowding, material design by DNA-mediated interactions, and molecular basis of bio-sensing enabled by nanoscale devices.

In 2013, Dr. Mittal received the Allan P. Colburn Award from the American Institute of Chemical Engineers (AICHE). In 2014, he was named Alfred P. Sloan Research Fellow in Chemistry and received Department of Energy’s Early Career Award in 2015 for his project titled “Biomolecular assembly processes in the design of novel functional materials”. He was also an invited participant to the Frontiers of Engineering symposium organized by National Academy of Engineering in 2015. Dr. Mittal is an active member of AICHE, Biophysical Society (including Biopolymers in vivo subgroup), American Chemical Society (ACS), and has helped organize many symposia/sessions in the national meetings. He has co-authored over 70 peer reviewed journal articles in journals that include Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, Physical Review Letters, Biophysical Journal, Journal of Physical Chemistry, Langmuir and Journal of Chemical Physics.

In Fall 2016 and Spring 2017, Dr. Mittal will be on sabbatical leave in the Department of Chemical and Biological Engineering at Princeton University.

Dr. Mittal will be formally recognized with this professorship at Founder's Day on Friday, October 7, 2016.

The Dolores T. and William E. Schiesser Faculty Fellowship was established on January 21, 2008, by Lehigh Chemical Engineering alumnus Dr. Gary Kohler (BS' 63, MS' 65, PhD '67) and his wife, Anne Drennan. The fund was established to honor Dr. Kohler's mentor and doctoral thesis advisor Dr. William E. Schiesser. Dr. Kohler spent his career at ExxonMobil Research retiring from the Environmental, Safety, Civil, and Marine Division of Exxon Mobil Corporation. William E. Schiesser is Emeritus McCann Professor of Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering and Emeritus Professor of Mathematics at Lehigh University. His teaching and research are directed toward numerical methods and associated software for ordinary, differential-algebraic and partial differential equations (ODE/DAE/PDEs). He is the author or coauthor of 13 books, and his ODE/DAE/PDE computer routines have been accessed by some 5,000 colleges and universities, corporations and government agencies.
