Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering major recognized in student poster competition at the AIChE Annual Meeting

Ms. Brianna Ruggiero, a junior in the Department of Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering has won third place in the student poster competition in the Catalysis and Reaction Engineering section at the 2016 Annual Meeting of the American Institute of Chemical Engineers in San Francisco, CA during the week of November 12-19, 2016. Brianna's poster was entitled 'Conversion of Bioethanol to Butadiene for Manufacture of Green Tires.' Essentially, converting biomass (wood) to rubber tires.

The objective of the research was to investigate the reaction network for this complex, multi-step reaction by ZnO-ZrO2/SiO2 catalysts. The molecular details of this cascade reaction were unraveled with application of temperature programmed surface reaction spectroscopy. Ms. Ruggiero's research is supported by a Clair Booth Luce Undergraduate Female Fellowship and is supervised by Professor Israel E. Wachs, the G. Whitney Snyder Distinguished Professor Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering at Lehigh University.
