Research from the group of Drs James Gilchrist and Mark Snyder featured on the cover of the journal Soft Matter

Midhun Joy, with his advisors Professors Mark Snyder and James Gilchrist, have been featured on the cover of the journal Soft Matter. Their work highlights structural diversity in thin film flow-assembled colloidal crystals where the square-packed (100) plane of the FCC crystal is aligned with the substrate.

Polycrystalline domains are coarsened into larger regions using vibration during assembly, and these square-packed domains show preferential orientation to the flow direction. Previous groups hoping to align colloidal crystals in this way have gone through the necessary steps of patterning the substrate or using non-scalable methods involving electric or optical fields.

Their work combines this novel technique with 2D and 3D characterization to demonstrate the robustness of this process.
