Dr. Mueller’s research interests lie in the areas of earthquake resistance and seismic performance of structural systems, rational structural mechanics models for reinforced and prestressed concrete members and connections, as well as computer programming. He has conducted research on the shear and torsion strength of reinforced concrete, served as principal investigator for research into the seismic resistance of precast concrete buildings, and has authored or co-authored several computer programs designed to facilitate structural analysis. He has served as a reviewer for the National Science Foundation in in the precast concrete/tall buildings area and for the Journal of the Structural Division, ASCE, and PCI-Journal in the areas of shear and torsion, and precast concrete buildings.
Dr. Mueller currently teaches courses in Numerical Methods in Civil Engineering, Behavior and Design of Earthquake-resistant Structures, and Engineering/Architectural Graphics and Design. He has taught courses in Fundamentals of Structural Steel and Structural Concrete Design, Prestressed Concrete, Structural Analysis, Matrix Structural Analysis, and Probability and Statistics.
Before he joined the Lehigh faculty Dr. Mueller was a research associate at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and the Institut für Baustatik und Konstruktion, ETH Zürich. He also attended military schools and served as a captain in the Swiss Army.
Dr. Mueller has been affiliated with the American Society of Civil Engineers and The American Concrete Institute , serving on committees for both organizations; the International Association for Bridge and Structural Engineering and the Precast Concrete Institute, serving on its Seismic Committee.
Dr. Mueller was a member of the committee that wrote the successful NSF proposal to establish the ATLSS Engineering Research Center. He also served as one of its thrust leaders in its initial phase.
