Curriculum Vitae

• Ph.D., Structural Mechanics, University of Bologna, Italy, 2008
• Laurea Degree (B.Sc. + M.Sc.), Civil Engineering, University of Bologna, Italy, 2004
• Degree of the Collegio Superiore, University of Bologna, Italy, 2004

Research and Scholarship

Dr. Bocchini received his Ph.D. from the University of Bologna (Italy) after completing a dual-advisor program under the guidance of Prof. Erasmo Viola from the University of Bologna and Prof. George Deodatis from Columbia University in the City of New York, where he had been a visiting scholar for one year. His research interests lay in the broad area of computational mechanics and probabilistic structural analysis. In particular, he works on the numerical simulation of uncertain structures and distributed civil infrastructure systems, to assess and improve the resilience of bridge networks under extreme events.

Dr. Bocchini is the author of more than 30 papers in peer reviewed international scientific journals and professional conferences. His scientific contributions have been cited in state-of-the-art reviews. He received the Marco Polo award, the Albino Nascè award, and the Carlo Felice Jodi award. He taught at the graduate and undergraduate levels at the School of Engineering and at the School of Architecture of the University of Bologna before joining Lehigh University.

Dr. Bocchini is a licensed Professional Engineer in Italy and a member of the American Society of Civil Engineers, Structural Engineering Institute, Engineering Mechanics Institute, International Association for Bridge Maintenance and Safety, International Association for Life-Cycle Civil Engineering, and American Institute for Sustainable Infrastructure.

Teaching and Service

Dr. Bocchini teaches CEE 59, Strength of Materials, an undergraduate course for sophomores and one of the foundational courses in mechanics required for the professional practice of civil engineering.

At the graduate level Dr. Bocchini is offering CEE 466, Advanced Finite Element Methods. This course combines several advanced topics, including dynamic finite elements and stochastic finite elements. Students who take this course will develop their own code for linear-elastic finite element analyses as well as for either dynamic or stochastic analyses. Bocchini is also teaching a course on Random Vibrations, CEE 358/458, to train graduate students in his research field.
