Professor Drew Francis
Introduction to all aspects of basic painting theory and technique of scenic
and decorative arts for the performing arts. Beginning with basic paint
chemistry, brushes and materials, scene painting will develop the techniques
and methods used to produce a variety of scenic illusions for the theater
through a series of projects. The course is designed to build a greater
understanding of the versatility of the brush and the paint through studio
painting projects. These projects cover all basic techniques used in most
scenic applications. The course will evaluate the relation between the real
object(s) and the object created through the artistic process. All painting
projects are preceded by instructional painting demonstrations. We also explore
the nature of painted illusion and its relation to the theater.
