Body and Mind

In this class you will explore the connection between physical well-being and mental acuity in your very first semester at Lehigh!  Learn the guiding principles of effective exercise, nutrition, and stress management.  Exploration will include theory and practice of the main fitness components, current market diet analysis, web-based diet tracking, and stress reduction techniques.  Additional objectives of this course are to gain an understanding of the power of personal choice and self-acceptance that will be a lifetime guiding principle.  By the conclusion of the course you will be able to set realistic goals and develop the pattern of discipline that will inevitably influence your academic success at Lehigh and beyond!

Professor Lefkowitz has a Ph.D. in Spanish language and literature from Princeton University, and has been teaching at Lehigh for 30 years. When she is not researching the latest fad diet, munching on raw vegetables or lifting in the Taylor gym fitness center, she teaches courses on Don Quijote, Practical Business Spanish, and Post Spanish Civil War literature and film. She also directs Study Abroad programs in Spain.  With this new seminar, she wishes to share her enthusiasm for a healthy life-style with incoming (Fresh) men and women.

Doug Strange has been the Director of Fitness and Recreation at Lehigh University for 13 years.  He manages the on campus fitness and recreational facilities and activities and is the central coordinator for strength and conditioning programs for Lehigh's varsity athletics teams.  He holds a Masters degree in Exercise Science and is a certified Health and Fitness Instructor (ACSM), Strength and Conditioning Specialist and Personal Trainer (NSCA), and a USA Weightlifting Club Coach.  He currently teaches Lifetime Fitness and Wellness and provides seminars on and off campus in areas of health, fitness, strength training and conditioning.
