Professor William Scott
A raging debate has erupted over reparations for African Americans because of
slavery and discrimination. The controversy, which dates back to the
Emancipation era, has finally come of age in America and the world. This class
examines the position of grassroots organizers, lawmakers and academics on both
sides of the issue. It attempts to cover the history, laws, and arguments
relating to this fierce debate in contemporary America.
William Scott holds the doctorate in American and African history from
Princeton. He has been at Lehigh 10 years, heading up our program in Africana
Studies. He has authored and co-edited three books on African American history,
and is currently completing a book of essays on "Ethiopianism, Myth of
Black Redemption."
