BETA CHI HISTORY

The Beta Chi chapter has been a contributing member of the Lehigh family since 1891. Our chapter roles also include many leaders of various sectors of our society. This is evidenced by the number of university facilities that are named in honor of Beta Chi brothers. Beta Chi has a strong, active Alumni Association that represents a network of approximately 750 living members.

ACADEMIC EXCELLENCE:

Cultivation of the intellect is one of the keystones of Beta Chi's mission. The brothers strongly emphasize the importance of scholarship and provide an environment that supports the goal of high achievement in this area. In the Summer of 2002, Beta Chi started awarding scholarships to freshman who show a strong commitment to the cultivation of the intellect.

ATHLETIC DOMINANCE:

Beta Chi has remained competitive in intramural sports for the past decade, and in 2002, Beta Chi was awarded the President's Cup for placing first in upperclassmen intramurals. Beta Chi's have also played key leadership and membership roles in Lehigh athletics since its founding, particularly in wrestling, football, hockey, lacrosse, and currently rugby.

SOCIAL LIFE:

Greek Week - a celebration of Greek life at Lehigh - would not be complete without The Beta Bull Ride, a mechanical bull riding competition. We have held various Greek Week events, such as beach soccer hot dog and pie eating contests and the bull ride, for over 25 years. Other social events include our annual Christmas and Spring Formals, and, of course, road trips to see the Yankees, Phillies, Flyers, Nets, and Nicks, bowling, paintball, whitewater rafting, and fishing. Beta Chi regularly schedules social events to balance the academic life with positive social outlets.

COMMUNITY CONTRIBUTION:

Beta Chi's have always had a campus-wide presence with leadership positions or membership status with the Inter-Fraternity Council, Student Senate, and other various civic and social organizations. Beta Chi brothers have been IFC president, radio DJ's, health educators, and political organizers, and club founders during their time at Lehigh.

Beta Chi also believes in being good neighbors to the Bethlehem community. Brothers volunteer their time at the Bethlehem Boys and Girls Club and other local organizations and participate in the Adopt a Family program, as well as particitpating in other charity events.
