UNDERGRADUATE STUDIES

Lehigh's B.S. in Bioengineering prepares students for careers in established and emerging fields that require combining engineering principles with the life sciences. Potential paths open to students include the health care, biomedical, pharmaceutical, biomaterials, and other biotechnology-related industries through careers in medicine, or graduate studies.

The curriculum for a B.S. in Bioengineering bridges rigorous training in the engineering and physical sciences with biology and bioengineering applications. The basic science, mathematics, and humanities core includes two courses in biology, and a course on bioethics. Students who pursue this degree take a common set of Bioengineering courses, and choose one of three tracks for specialization:

  • Biopharmaceutical engineering, which encompasses biochemistry and chemical engineering. Representative topics relevant to this track include genomics, recombinant DNA, protein engineering, bioprocessing, drug synthesis and delivery
  • Bioelectronics/biophotonics will appeal to students interested in applications of electrical engineering and physics in bioengineering. Representative topics include signal processing, biosensors, MEMs, biochips for DNA sequencing, laser and fiber based optical technology
  • Cell and tissue engineering straddles the fields of molecular and cell biology, materials science, mechanical and electrical engineering. It encompasses biomaterials and biomechanics, from cells and tissue to organs and systems.

The Bioengineering program strongly encourages experiential learning via undergraduate research, summer internships, and participation in team-based design projects through Lehigh's Integrated Product Design (IPD) program.
