The Archaeometallurgy Laboratory at Lehigh University provides an independent study course for undergraduate students wishing to learn more about Pre-Columbian technology. We have a study collection of over 25 metal artifacts associated with several Pre-Columbian cultures including the Moche, Early Chimu, and Inca cultures. These objects of gold, silver and copper are available for examination by students. They learn the techniques involved in preparing, analyzing, and interpreting the artifacts using advanced scientific techniques available in the Department of Materials Science and Engineering. The underlying concept is to mount an exhibit in the Zoellner Museum (university museum), oriented to highlight the interaction between science and the arts for the students in our school. Lehigh has a major museum facility as part of the Zoellner Arts Center. It has a two floor gallery to display the extensive collection of objects held by the university, which include many fine paintings, Roman objects, ancient coins, Pre-Colombian ceramics and metals, and Chinese pottery. The university further supports this endeavor by offering a series of three academic courses focusing on museum studies and a Museum Internship Program with Allentown Art Museum, Lehigh County Historical Society, Bethlehem Historical Partnership, Hugh Moore Park, and the Canal Museum.
In addition, the Archaeometallurgy Laboratory has stong links with Lehigh University's Archaeological Excavation in Honduras, run by Professor David Small.
