LNN/DNI/NTI joint meeting at Drexel University on May 27th:
PA Regional Nanotechnology Conference: Collaborating in Today’s Economy

Today’s economic environment poses great challenges to businesses, government and academia. Pennsylvania’s future economy and workforce will be affected by new initiatives such as development and implementation of green technologies and alternative energy. The PA Initiative for Nanotechnology (PIN), established by the Department of Community and Economic Development in 2005, plays a key role in these areas. Three regional organizations - Drexel University’s DNI, the LNN of Lehigh University, and The Nanotechnology Institute (NTI) – operate under the PIN strategy to help businesses succeed. At this first joint DNI / LNN conference, these organizations and other participants will present their capabilities and resources, and lead discussions on issues impacting businesses involved in nanotechnology. Tours of DNI research facilities will also be offered. Woodcock Washburn is funding refreshments at this event so it is free!

Financial Support Available for Lehigh University Student Internships at LNN Sustaining Member Companies
Summer of ‘09

The Center for Advanced Materials and Nanotechnology (CAMN) of Lehigh University was recently awarded a contract by the Pennsylvania Department of Community and Economic Development through the Pennsylvania Ben Franklin Technology Development Authority (PBFTDA). This award is in support of Lehigh University’s collaboration with an NSF-funded Materials Research Science and Engineering Center (MRSEC) at Carnegie Mellon University. The goal of this award is to promote research in advanced materials and nanotechnology which will benefit Pennsylvania industries. As a result, the CAMN is soliciting proposals to provide 100% support for up to two Lehigh University students that can be matched to an opportunity at a Lehigh Nanotech Network Sustaining Member Company located in Pennsylvania that meets the guidelines provided.

Thank you for your assistance,
Joan Stanescu
LNN Secretary

Chairman’s Note
April 2009

With this first edition of a quarterly newsletter for the Lehigh Nanotech Network, I want to express my thanks for your membership and support since 2004. This newsletter is part of our initiative to provide you with more and better information to help your business through education, connections, and ideas. We will use it to highlight new members, and will also publish news from your company if you wish to submit a story or new release.

The LNN is now a highly recognized network in the region, and it is gratifying to see our membership now at 90 companies and education and government organizations. People clearly see value in staying connected. We have taken steps to improve our website and keep it current – check it out! The Executive Board is planning events that target current needs and issues. We hope that you will stay in touch, provide us with suggestions, and participate in LNN events and requests that will help us maintain an active and productive community of nanotechnology interests. Our main goals include:

  • Expanding our roster of the current 28 Sustaining Members
  • Finding opportunities to bring direct support to members in the form of funding or resources
  • Interacting with PA initiatives to support nanotechnology as a key component of the regional economy
  • Generation of ideas and partnerships through creation of Focus Groups within the LNN
  • Having a more structured annual agenda to improve participation
  • Improving communications.

This is an ambitious list and we welcome your ideas and involvement to move forward.

Sincerely,
Gene Lucadamo
Academic Chair
