What other academic outreach programs are available in the Lehigh Valley?
There are many other programs offered through the University and the Lehigh Valley. The department has assembled a list of these other programs in an attempt to 'bridge the gap'.




S.T.A.R. Academy FAQs:

When and where is it held?
S.T.A.R. Academy is held 2 Saturdays a month (1 Saturday a month for junior S.T.A.R.) from 8 am - 4:30 pm, beginning in October and ending in April. The sessions are held at Lehigh University in Bethlehem, PA.

How do I get to the University?
Maps and directions are provided by the University online, and are included in the mailing sent by the Academic Outreach Office the week before the Saturday session.


How do I become S.T.A.R. Academy tutee?
Both regular S.T.A.R. and junior S.T.A.R. tutees are required to download an application and submit it to the Outreach Office. The applications are available.


Is there a fee?
There is no fee for tutees. However, space is limited. Typically, there are 30 junior S.T.A.R. tutees, and 100 S.T.A.R. tutees: 50 from middle school and 50 from high school.


Is transportation available?
Transportation is provided to Bethlehem city students only.


Should I pack a lunch?
You won't need a lunch because S.T.A.R. Academy provides continental breakfast and lunch free of cost to tutees and tutors.


What activities do the S.T.A.R. students do?

Who are the tutors?

The S.T.A.R. tutors are students enrolled at Lehigh University students or local area high schools. Tutors are interviewed by the S.T.A.R. Advisory board before being selected, and attend an orientation before beginning their roles as tutors.


How do I become a S.T.A.R. Academy tutor?
S.T.A.R. Academy tutors (for regular and junior S.T.A.R.) can apply online here.


I'm interested in becoming a tutor, but I'm worried about the time commitment.
What's the schedule for S.T.A.R. Academies?
Don't worry! Regular S.T.A.R. Academy only meets two Saturdays a month and Junior S.T.A.R. Academy only meets one. This year's calendar is already available if you want to check dates.

High School Scholars FAQ's:


Can I apply to become a High School Scholar?
No. You must be nominated by your teacher, guidance counselor, school personnel, or principal. You can talk to these folks and request that they nominate you, but the final decision is up to them.


Where can I get a High School Scholar Application?
Since all students must be nominated by high school faculty or staff we don't provide applications online. Applications are mailed to school guidance counselors.



How many students can be nominated by each school?
Up to 3 students can be nominated by each school. However, if a son or daughter of Lehigh University faculty or staff is among the top 3 nominees, then the school may nominate up to 5 students.
If your school is nominating up to 5 students, please try to include a diverse group of nominees.

How many classes can I take?
Each high school scholar can take one course each semester free of cost.


What courses can I take?
A list of courses for is available here.


When is the application deadline?
Typically, the Fall application deadline is in May and the Spring application deadline is in November, but refer to the cover letter your guidance counselor received for specific dates.


When do I find out if I got in?
Normally, Fall applicants are notified in June and Spring applicants in December. The Academic Outreach Office will mail a letter to you regardless of whether you are admitted.




Lehigh Valley Science & Engineering Fair FAQ's:

How do I apply?
Applying is pretty easy. Just submit the required forms to Dr. Odi in the Academic Outreach Office, but be sure to make copies, and keep your originals.


When is the deadline for Applications?
This year's deadline for submitting forms is November 16th, 2007.


When and where is this year's fair?
The Science & Engineering Fair will be held on Friday March 14th and Saturday March 15th, 2008 in the Rauch Field House.


Can I set up my project Saturday morning?
No. All projects and posters must be set up Friday night from 4-7:30 pm, no exceptions.
If you can't make the Friday set up time, arrange to have a teacher or parent set up your project.



Who judges the fair?
Each year, 135-150 science and engineering professionals with a minimum of a bachelor of science degree volunteer to evaluate the projects.
