Tikkun Pre-Advance 2000

Tikkun Ministries International is a covenental network of congregations, including our congregation, Beit Simcha.
My wife (Pamela) and I attended the pre-advance (retreat) for senior leaders.
Much of this retreat was devoted to prayers, laying hands on each person.
There was also some good discussion and teaching about the vision of Tikkun.
These are my notes.
The first part is open discussion of topics raised by the leaders, followed by notes from talks.
I highly recommend Dan Juster's talk introducing the vision of Tikkun.

Topic: Roles of an apostle?
Dan Juster’s propositions:

  1. Apostles are what they were in biblical times, except for writing authoritative Scripture
  2. Apostles may be chosen by other apostles (apostolic succession in historic churches)
  3. Apostles may be chosen supernaturally by the Holy Spirit
  4. Apostles provide governmental order and covering for five-fold ministry
Ron Corbett:
  • Luke 6:13 -- called by Yeshua
  • Luke 11:49 -- more obedience than outcome oriented
  • Acts 4:33 Acts 5:39 etc.
  • They send help to empower other believers; they are gentle and nurturing; they work together with elders
  • People were to obey their decisions
  • We’re still in an early, restorative, formative mode
  • Apostolic team should meet with leaders in training
  • Come for several days to a week
Don Finto:
  • More comfortable with adjective 'apostolic' than noun 'apostle', though the noun is definitely biblical
  • Eph 4 makes it clear that unity requires the five-fold gifting
  • Submission is never top-down but bottom-up: even Yeshua didn’t demand submission, but expected voluntary submission to authority
  • Authority is relational, not just positional
  • Apostolic authority will be restored in signs and wonders
  • Living things reproduce themselves, people, cells, congregation, and apostolic streams.
Ted Simon:
  • Psalm 133 says that the oil of anointing for unity flows down the head, so you’ve got to have a head for the oil to flow down onto. Right order preserves unity and ministry, including pastoral ministry.
  • What relationship did the centurion have with Yeshua, but he did recognize the Master’s authority.
  • Apostolic networks ties congregations together to have influence in the world well beyond themselves.
  • Modify bylaws to acknowledge authority to apostolic counsel to deal with significant disputes.
Topic: Renewing the vision of Messianic Jewish life?
Michael Rudolph:
  • Over the years, has tried various models
  • Adding Jewish things (especially Orthodox Jewish) to church-believing lifestyle
  • But NYC Ashkenazic cultural style of Jewish is not necessarily all there is to Judaism
  • Witness to what it means to be a covenant-keeping, Torah-observant people to church and synagogue
Don Finto quotes Charles Spurgeon: "illustrations are the windows of sermons."
Looking to Torah for practical principles for our lives
Sabbath, Torah scroll and services, mezuzot, tzitzit, shofars, tabernacle as model for sanctuary
Using discernment to learn from the Rabbis about halacha
Dan Juster recommends: Laurence Schiffman, From Text to Tradition (conservative Rabbi) and Jacob Neusman, Introduction to the Mishnah
Presume we must be passionate in life with the Holy Spirit and connected with the Jewish community
Patti Juster:
  • For us it is prophetic to live a Jewish calling as Messianic Jews
  • A central element of the Jewish community is community (Acts 2:42)
  • We need to develop a community that gets together daily, sharing bread
  • The Lord is looking for a loving home where he place adopted children
What is our attitude toward Torah? Psalm 2, 119, Malachi 2:1-9, Rev 2, speak of love for Torah
Being the dwelling place of the presence of the Lord
Romans 9, intercessory dimension of being Jewish
Be zealous for the unity of the body, because it is the ultimate weapon against the enemy
Pamela: teaching about Torah, making halachic rulings
Carl: we must be connected to Jewish history and community, such as Jewish fair, concerts, studies
James Dunne? The Parting of the Ways
What applies today?
"As contained in ordinances" is nailed to the cross, having to do with the Aaronic priesthood and sacrificial system. We don’t need these ordiances because we have a Cohen Hagadol who has made the sacrifice once for all. Col 2:14.
Do you trust the Rabbis to teach halakha? We can learn from the Rabbis, but not carte blanche.
We want to observe Torah being led by the Spirit. Ps 40:8. "I desire to do your will, O my God; your law is within my heart."
The Church was not grafted into a Roman tree. You have a rich heritage that you’ve been duped out of.
The tree has a sap; it puts out its leaves and fruit as certain times of the year.

Moshe Morrison's talk

2 Corinthians 1: 3. Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of compassion and the God of all comfort, who comforts us in all our troubles, so that we can comfort those in any trouble with the comfort we ourselves have received from God.
There is a purpose in our afflictions. He is a God of comfort.
Rav Shaul experiences persecution in the midst of revival, signs and wonders.
Ohalei Rachamim is expecting more revival, signs and wonders and also stronger opposition and persecution.
When Yeshua raised Lazarus from the dead, not everyone was happy about it. Some conspired against him.
10-11 him we have set our hope that he will continue to deliver us, as you help us by your prayers.
Our prayers make a difference!
When there are afflictions, keep our focus on Him.
2 Corinthians 4:16-17 Therefore we do not lose heart. Though outwardly we are wasting away, yet inwardly we are being renewed day by day. For our light and momentary troubles are achieving for us an eternal glory that far outweighs them all.
God is producing something inside of us, which is glorious and eternal.
Romans 8:28: What does it mean that God works all things to the good?
It doesn’t mean that everything is going to be hunky-dory.
It means that God is going to redeem and bring glory out of all our situations, even our afflictions.
Like Michelangelo revealing the sculpture by chiseling away the stone,
the afflictions in our lives are like God’s chisel blows that removes all the rock,
that keeps from appearing as he is, as he always intends us to be.

Patti Juster: Hosea 6, Isaiah 30, Job, etc., show that God allows afflictions and wounds in our lives.
Some ask, what kind of loving God would do these things?
You don’t know the love the Father. A father allows chemotherapy to bring healing to his child.
He allows the breaking of a bone to heal the bone.
He allows the fire to burn away impurity.

Hosea 6:1. "Come, let us return to the LORD. He has torn us to pieces but he will heal us; he has injured us but he will bind up our wounds. 2 After two days he will revive us; on the third day he will restore us, that we may live in his presence." Growing to Maturity is available in Russian

Don Finto's talk

Ps 100:4 "Enter his gates with thanksgiving and his courts with praise."
You don’t get into the throne room by telling him how much you want him.
You don’t get into the throne room by repenting your way there – you have to get into the throne room to truly repent. See Isaiah 6.
You get into the throne by giving thanks and praise.
By thanksgiving, we de-focus ourselves and move into Him.
Thank you, Lord, for a secure future.
Relax, let go, and know that I am G-d.
Do everything the Psalms tell you to do. It’s full body worship. Get loose toward the Lord.
Praise and thanksgiving is step number 1.
Look at God. Not how I feel, but Him.
Releasing your spirit personality within you.
When we become believers, our spirits connect with His Spirit.
Our mind can rationalize away what our spirit is trying to say to us.
There are tens of thousands who know in their spirit that Yeshua is the Messiah, but are unwilling to admit it in their minds.
Allow God to release this spirit-person in you. Like Michelangelo releasing the sculpture from the stone.
Hear the Lord on who you are ¾ and not somebody else. 2 Corinthians 10:13: We, however, will not boast beyond proper limits, but will confine our boasting to the field God has assigned to us. Burnout happens when we work in a field that God has not assigned to us.
Don’t presume upon God, nor get too reluctant to do it.
None of us are competent to do what God wants us to do. Our competency is in Him.
Go into the Spirit that is deep inside you and you will get the answer to what He wants you to do.
If you had to go to the deepest place within you, in your inwards, where God dwells, and decide whether to do something, would you do that?
The problem is that people do what their minds or their appetites want, not what the Spirit wants.
He wants us to dream, using our godly creative imagination.
Not vain imaginations, not vain dreams or daydreams.
Choose your dreams, your daydreams. Dream about synagogues, mosques, prophetically.
John 4:35. "Do you not say, 'Four months more and then the harvest'? I tell you, open your eyes and look at the fields! They are ripe for harvest.
Our role is not to convert people, but to obey the Holy Spirit.
But we do need to recognize that there is a harvest ready to be picked.
Your People Shall Be My People
¾ book due out early next year. Gospel Light is the publisher.
How Finto sees his role:
  1. The Return of the Jewish people to the land is a fulfillment of prophecy. Much of the Church won’t look at it. "Not one shall be left behind." Make aliyah.
  2. When the Jewish people are back in the land, their eyes will be opened: Isaiah 6, Ezekiel 37, Hosea 3. Don’t look at your human relatives; look at the Scripture.
  3. It brings blessings to the world. Since Israel has been in the land, the statistics spell accelerating revival. 12,000/hour Chinese coming to the Lord. Indonesia is 20% believer, Korea 40%. Revival among Muslims.
The Puritan Hope. Puritans saw and prayed for the revival of the Jewish people as key for revival in churches, based on Romans 11.
We are living fulfillment of what people hundreds of years ago looked for.
Lilies Among Thorns

Dan Juster's talk (Tikkun vision)

Tikkun is a network of congregations, ministries, ministry leaders of a particular orientation, with a deeper agreement.
We’re not saying there’s not a value of affiliations or fellowships of diverse views.
1 Corinthians 1:10. Be in agreement in all things.

1) Broad orthodoxy: we are in accord with the orthodox teachings of the historic church.
We may want to speak about these in a Jewish framework, and need to correct teaching about Israel.
Our primary relationship to the Church is yes, not no.
1 Corinthians 15:1-4, Philippians 2:5-11 (confessional hymn, based on Isaiah 45:23, deity of Yeshua).
We can affirm (using Messianic terms) the Apostle’s creed (2nd century).
We’re not going wrestle over these things, such as the triune nature of God.
Some say that they are seeking "a more authentic Messianic Judaism," i.e., more like the synagogue.
The test of authenticity is how we reflect in our theology and worship the central themes of Scripture.
There’s diversity of liturgy, Hebrew, etc., so that they who visit us will say "Jewish."
New covenant realities have to be the center of our worship and our preaching.
If we play them down, we’re going to miss it. Resurrection power must be released. We are a new creation.
Yeshua must be the central point. "If I be lifted up, I will draw all men onto men."
We as a network are going to be firm on this.
Cindy Jacobs. Evangelical Pietism and the Jewish People. The Church is not wholly anti-Jewish.
We’re not de-legitimizing the Church. We’re not seeking to turn the Church in Messianic Jewish Synagogues.
We roll our eyes at fringe groups like the Ephraimites. You don’t have to be a descendant of the lost tribes.
We don’t need to seek convert Gentiles into Jews. 1Corinthians 7.
Let’s learn from Don Finto. In Israel, he found he has a Jewish name, so he must have had Jewish ancestors.
Still, it’s authentic for Don Finto to come alongside Tikkun as a Gentile.

2) Jewish calling: we are to keep Torah in a New Covenant way. Jeremiah 31.
The New Covenant assumes the knowledge of Moses. It assumes the Holy Spirit will teach how to apply Torah.
The Sermon on the Mount is not just the old dispensation of Moses.
It is the New Covenant application of Torah principles, more exacting than what was understood before Yeshua.
Torah life is the release of power by the Spirit, releasing the deeper meaning of Torah practice.
Torah life is filled with the prophetic.
It’s not a cafeteria option. Those who are born Jews are called to live as Jews. It is an irrevocable calling.
The saved Jew is the saved remnant of Israel.
Our task is to the Jew first, to integrate our lives in the Jewish community, a part of Jewish community, not apart from the Jewish community.
Matthew 5:16 "In the same way, let your light shine before men, that they may see your good deeds and praise your Father in heaven."
We are organically tied to Israel: to Asher, Eitan, Moshe Morrison, Eddie and Jackie, etc. That’s why someone from Israel always comes to a Tikkun Advance. That’s why we encourage aliyah.
So in this regard, we are unity with the larger Messianic movement.
See Tikkun as part of the larger Messianic movement.

3) We seek to move in Holy Spirit power.
No one says "That’s the Holy Spirit and I’m rejecting it." They say, "That’s not the Holy Spirit and I reject it."
We need to accept a broader understanding of how the Spirit moves beyond our cultural assumptions.
Stories about how God prepared Dan through prophetic experiences for powerful anointing on Patti.
Asher once roared like a lion and knocked over a row of chairs.
Dan didn’t know what to do, so he said, "Let’s sing Adon Olam."
The Holy Spirit is by definition associated with signs and wonders, gifts and manifestations, in first century and all revivals since. See Jonathan Edwards.
Synagogue and Church have chosen the rationalistic over the prophetic, because it feels safer.
The same manifestation can be of God or of the flesh; you need discernment.
Prophecy is the best, because it brings discernment (2 Corinthians 14).
Commitment to cell groups. This is the place to see people mature in the gifts of the Holy Spirit.

4) We believe in the unity of the body. John 17:17-21. "That all of them may be one, Father, just as you are in me and I am in you. May they also be in us so that the world may believe that you have sent me."
Church of the City.
When the leaders of the church in a city is in unity and takes communion together, that is the highest level of spiritual warfare against the principalities and powers over a region.
When the powers of darkness are bound over a city, there will be a massive revival of Jews and Gentiles.
Separate kingdom building weakens witness, especially to the Jews.
Toward Jerusalem Council II has to take place in every city.
There is one body.
Appreciate cultural differences and our own calling.
Success of our mission is contingent on the state of the church of the city in our locality.
Ted Simon and El Shaddai has leadership over Tabernacles celebration with sixty churches participating in Frederick.

5) We believe in the restoration of five-fold government. The New Covenant pattern is normative.
There is a function of apostolic ministry and oversight that has never been done away with.
It remains in the historic church, in apostolic succession. Unfortunately, it has become formal.
So God is reviving it through charismatic gifts and power.
Just as there is an eldership to oversee a congregation, there is an eldership to oversee a network of congregations.
There is a plurality of elders; no head honchos who cannot be overruled, but mutual submission.
Peter Wagner, The New Apostolic Churches.
Tikkun started when Asher prophetically said that we need to have our own Messianic apostolic stream, starting with Beth Messiah, El Shaddai and Rosh Pinah (Moshe Morrison).
Church of the city also needs apostolic leadership. Other streams will have to submit to local apostolic leaders.

6) We are a high commitment network.

  1. We are committed to gathering together. It’s necessary to build relationships, hear the Spirit, accountability, etc. Advances, leadership counsels.
  2. We have to travel to be with each other. Apostolic team travels; we travel to one another; pulpit exchanges.
  3. We court before people join. Others join us because the Spirit leads them.
  4. We tithe. Pastors tithe to their oversight. Congregations tithe. We tithe for mission expansion. Emissaries, MJBI and bible schools.
That’s us. That’s what we’re about.
We are an international network. People on our board are living in Israel. There’s an authority on our board that comes from Israel.

Irv Horstman: Integration into the Jewish community

It’s part of our responsibility to live in community with each other and also with the rest of the Jewish community.
As we, not us and them.
The way we live will bring sanctification to God’s name.
A solid community producing solid works brings glory to the Father.
Don’t allow your congregation to be a ghetto.
Live in the Jewish community. Not with signs and banners, but with your life.
Volunteer, attend synagogue, befriend people, be real. It’s not just terminology, it’s not just political correctness.
Irv showed up for a prayer service at a Reform synagogue and was soon asked to help lead it, even after he explained that he is Messianic, and then asked him to share his testimony.
Weddings and funerals (even presiding at some).
Hang out in the coffee shops in the community.
Apply Romans 12, one of the most practical chapters of the Bible, in your relationship with Jewish community.
Be humble and loving.

Moshe Morrison reads his paper about revival in his town, "Piercing Pikesville." (Hilarious and visionary!)

Dan Juster talks about leadership

Pray for two young men to mentor in positions of leadership.
Ex 18:17 ff. Jethro’s advice to Moshe
Luke 9:1-6, Luke 10:1-2, Sending out of the 12, then the 70. Acts 2:42,46, 1Cor 14: 2Tim 2:1-2
Structure and Time
Structure: there is a pattern of congregational life that is normative in the Bible.
Pattern is small groups now called cell groups.
In Moses and Yeshua, we see that a person can care for or disciple 10 or at most 12 people.
Most pastoral issues are to be handled by cell leaders. Here’s what Jethro told Moshe to do: Ex 18:20 Teach them the decrees and laws, and show them the way to live and the duties they are to perform.
Motivate and train and heal the people in cell groups, get them involved in evangelism in cell groups, hold them accountable in cell groups.
Small group is the training ground for the gifts of the Holy Spirit.
There you learn how to handle the domineering person, or the shy person to draw him out.
Every Shabbat there’s a testimony about cell groups.
In small groups, you show them by example, up close, as Yeshua showed his disciples.
Watch what I do, then you do it, then I’ll watch and give you feedback.
So cell groups is not secondary, but a primary Scriptural pattern to pastoring the flock.
Cell groups (unlike "home groups") are primarily outward looking and evangelistic.
Give leaders (young men) authority, allowing them to make mistakes.
When you raise up young men into leadership, you will be resisted.
Time management follows vision.
If you put your primary energy into the flock as a whole rather than the people you are mentoring, you will produce a weak flock.
Train your people in basic counseling.
Look for young people, for example, on college campuses.
