ONR Award N00014-12-1-0023: Integrating SHM and Time-Variant System Performance of Naval Ship Structures for Near Real-Time Decision Making under Uncertainty: A Comprehensive Framework

Short Summary:

This project focuses on integrating the structural health monitoring (SHM) information and the system performance of naval ships in a comprehensive framework that supports the real-time or near real-time decision making process.

Read More:

During the last decade, structural health monitoring (SHM) has been one of the most active research areas in infrastructure systems. The major part of this research has focused on the development of advanced and efficient sensing technologies and on fabrication of prototype devices that are potentially suitable for online monitoring of performance of individual structures and infrastructure systems. Facing the massive data generated by such sensor systems, researchers have recently began to turn their attention to developing efficient data acquisition, collection, processing, and interpretation algorithms and software. Although this research largely impacted the engineering practice, there is still an outstanding question of how to optimally plan SHM activities over the service life of deteriorating structures. The main goal of this project is to provide a novel framework which can improve the system performance of naval ship structures by adopting cost-effective management plans based on the integration of SHM concepts and time-variant system performance. The investigation is performed under the Office of Naval Research (ONR) support with Dr. Dan M. Frangopol as the Principal Investigator.
