From: Greg Kuperberg Subject: Forwarded posting about xxx Date: Mon, 29 Jun 1998 09:01:56 -0700 (PDT) I have been regularly posting new listings in the xxx mathematics archive to sci.math.research. This week's article has an announcement which may be of interest to readers of toplist, so I am forwarding it here. Greg Subject: This week in the xxx mathematics archive (22 Jun - 26 Jun) Here are this week's titles in the xxx mathematics archive. You are invited to browse the corresponding e-prints at the Front for the xxx Mathematics Archive: http://front.math.ucdavis.edu/ and to contribute papers following the instructions at: http://front.math.ucdavis.edu/submissions.html The news this week is that the MSRI preprint series was contributed to the xxx mathematics archive, adding 275 extra e-prints to the total. This is a small but firm step towards the eventual goal of making the archive the universal first layer of the research literature in mathematics (at least the recent literature), with journals, conference proceedings, review services, institutional preprint series, and so forth comprising a second layer. The mathematics advisory committee will be in contact with other institutes to persuade them to join the lead of MSRI. The IMS in Stony Brook and AIM, the new American Institute of Mathematics, are also contributing new papers to the archive. Another consequence of the MSRI migration is that several of the slow categories, for example number theory, now have an inviting nucleus of papers. [Currently AT has 19+16. - GK] In addition two subject-based archives, Dynamical Systems and Orthogonal Polynomials and Special Functions, have agreed to merge completely with the xxx mathematics archive. OPSF is a particularly happy development since xxx staff received an unsolicited request from their oversight committee to merge. As many of you may know, until this year the subject-based mathematics archives on the Internet were something of a Tower of Babel, with an ftp site here and some web pages there, each with different submission rules. These archive migrations have brought some order to the chaos, although there is certainly more work to do in this direction. Here is an overall picture of the migration work to date: Archive number ------- ------ Subject-based, non-xxx archives MAGNUS 75 Several Complex Variables 81 Logic E-prints 223 Commutative Algebra 7 Banach Spaces 332 LACES pending Dynamical Systems pending Orthogonal Polynomials pending Institutional migrations MSRI (Berkeley) 275+32* IMS (Stony Brook) pending Old xxx archives merged into math alg-geom 1211 q-alg 1178 funct-an 322 dg-ga 562 cd-hg 6 aut-fms 6 physics.math-ph 135 Total 4413 * A+B means that A papers were moved in and B papers were contributed previously to xxx by the authors. That leaves 967 fresh contributions from authors since the comprehensive math archive began in December/January, for a grand total of 5380 e-prints as of the end of this week.
