 For more on Steenrod Homology and its history and relations to other
areas of topology, have a look at Mardesic's book. It is there in all
its glory and in all its gory detail. (The detailed calculations are
often very difficult to follow unless you build up some feeling for
homotopy coherence first.  Sibe's book does this well but it can still
be tough going in places.)

If you want a review of it rather than seeing the book, I wrote one for
the Bull. London Math Soc. (2001) I think.

What Claude Schochet  did not mention was that this homology is also
very closely related to Algebraic K-Theory of C*-algebras and various
other functional analytic structures.
