Subject: for the list Date: Wed, 26 May 2004 07:30:52 -0400 (EDT) From: "W. Stephen Wilson" To: dmd1@lehigh.edu Many who have visited Japan met Professor Akie Tamamura. I met her first in 1980 and saw her on most of my subsequent visits to Japan. Most recently she was at the Nishida conference last summer so it was a shock to hear of her passing. Nori Minami kindly tracked down a colleague to write a short obituary for her. Sincerely, Steve W. A memorial service was held on 6 - 7 November in Okayama, Japan Professor Tamamura has studied on the J-groups of the stunted lens spaces and recently, has worked on rational homotopy theory, mainly the classification of elliptic graded commutative algebras. She was a professor at Okayama University of Science for more than 10 years and also served as the chief of Department of Applied Mathematics for 3 years. While she was one of the members of the department, she invited positively many foreign topologists to the university. We suppose that they have felt her human warmth via the hospitality. It is still really hard to believe we shall never see her again. We will always remember her, her kindnesses and many smiles. Yours sincerely, Katushiko Kuribayashi (kuri@math.shinshu-u.ac.jp) Department of Mathematical Sciences Faculty of Science Shinshu University Matsumoto, Nagano 390-8621, Japan
