A reply to the post about Alexander polynomials:

Max, since you only mention one Alexander polynomial. I assume you're
talking about knots in the classical dimension: S^1 in S^3. In this
case the Alexander polynomial will always satisfy p(t)=p(t^{-1}) up to
similarity. See, e.g., Lickorish, Intro. to Knot Theory, Thm. 6.10.
