Brayton Gray put a query on the Alg. Top. Discussion List; I have a
response:

The demonstration that e^{i\pi} = -1 using imaginary interest rates is due
to David Mumford.  He developed this for a lecture he gave to a group of
laypeople on mathematical topics, and he published it in the Notices of the
AMS a few years back.  I do not have the exact reference.
