Subject: Canberra, Edinburgh Date: Fri, 22 Feb 2002 23:32:14 +0000 From: Andrew Ranicki To: "dmd1@lehigh.edu (Don Davis)" <"dmd1"@lehigh.edu (Don Davis)> 1. Amnon Neeman was kind enough to check with me before circulating my off-the-cuff remark. To be honest, I can't remember using such strong language, but I certainly did suggest a broadly-based topology meeting, and did indicate that I felt homotopy theorists had a tendency to talk to themselves (which is indeed a property of many individual mathematicians, and even occasionally myself). There seemed no harm in having Amnon circulate my opinion, except possibly to my reputation! Frank Adams used to tell me that I cannot even say homotopy correctly, putting the stress on the wrong syllable. 2. Let me take this opportunity of advertising a 2-day meeting "Noncommutative localization in algebra and topology" to be held at ICMS in Edinburgh, 29-30 April, 2002.
