Topology Conference Travel Information
By air:
Allentown-Bethlehem-Easton Airport (ABE) is 5 miles from campus.
Taxi
service to campus costs about $15 for the first person, and $5 for additional
people. If no cab is waiting, call (610) 867-5855 to obtain one.
From some cities, significant savings can be obtained by flying to Newark
Airport. Bus service from Newark Airport to Bethlehem is quite convenient. It
takes 1 hour and 45 minutes, leaving from every terminal of the airport and
arriving at the (South) Bethlehem Bus Terminal, 3 blocks from campus. Do not get off
at the Industrial Park, which is the first Bethlehem exit. The bus line is
Trans-Bridge and costs about $12 one way.
The walk from the Bethlehem Bus Terminal to the Math Dept. is
short
and easy (4 blocks South, which is the uphill direction), as is the walk to the hotel (1 block North then 3 blocks West). The "temporary" bus terminal is just east of New Street,
between Third and Fourth Streets.
Here is the bus schedule for both the Trans-Bridge line connecting Bethlehem to
the Newark Airport, and the Bieber Bus Line connecting Bethlehem to
Philadelphia (the Philadelphia station is at 10th and Filbert, within walking
distance of the Market Street subway stop).
Driving:
If coming from the West on Rte. 78, take Rte. 22 where it splits off, just
before Allentown. This will be counter to the route to Lehigh suggested by
the exit sign. There is now extensive construction underway on Route 22, so you might be well advised to take 78 instead. If you take 22, follow it to the exit which says Rte. 378 South to Bethlehem
and Lehigh University. After four miles, this becomes non-freeway as it crosses
a bridge over the Lehigh River. Turn left (not a sharp turn) onto Third Street
at the first traffic light at the end of the bridge. After two short blocks,
turn right onto Brodhead St., in front of the Comfort Suites Hotel. Go up
3 blocks to Packer Ave., and turn left. Christmas-Saucon hall is a beige stucco
building on the right after a long block. Neville Auditorium (where the hour talks are) and MacGinnes Hall (where the 40-minute talks are) are more modern buildings across the street from the Math building. A campus map
with more detail will be provided in advance to registrants, and will be
available here as well.
If you take Route 78, there is an exit to Lehigh University, which leads you to the East side of town. Follow 3rd street (Route 412) to Taylor Street, and turn left. About 5 blocks up will be Packer Ave., and the Math department and lecture rooms are on Packer, in the middle as you go through campus.
If coming from the North on Rte. 33 or the Pa. Turnpike, you will get on
Rte. 22,
and follow the above instructions.
If coming from the East on Rte. 78, do not take the exit which says Rte. 22 to
Phillipsburg. Stay on Rte. 78 to the Hellertown exit. Turn right at the end of the
Hellertown exit. After about a mile, Rte. 412 veers to the left. Follow it.
It becomes Fourth Street in Bethlehem. Turn left at Taylor or Webster to get
to campus.
Those coming from Philadelphia could take the Northeast Extension of the
Pa. Turnpike (Rte. 476) to Rte. 22, and
proceed as above. It is much quicker to take the
Quakertown exit, then Rte. 309 North to Rte. 378 to Bethlehem. Once over the
hill,
look for Summit St., one block past the flashing yellow light. Turn right and
stay on Summit for 3 blocks until it ends at Brodhead. Turn left onto Brodhead
and follow campus map to be provided later. If you miss Summit, keep going to
Broadway, the first traffic light, and turn right. Then turn right at Fourth
and right at Brodhead (both traffic lights).
Locations
All talks will be held in either Neville Hall or MacGinnes, both of which are located across the street from the Mathematics Department (in Christmas-Saucon Hall).

The University has provided directions to Neville Hall .
Maps
Here are several campus and area maps that should help you find Lehigh, and the dorm
or other campus buildings.
-
Bethlehem, Surrounding Towns and major roads Bethlehem marked with a star...
-
Bethlehem, a bit more detail The star is on Lehigh now...
-
South Bethlehem, streets near campus The star is on the President's house...
-
Campus map. This has all buildings numbered and marked. It's probably best
to download and print this, rather than try to view it. It's reasonably
detailed, but too big for most computer screens. One thing to note is that the map is oriented so that the top of the map is South (which is uphill). Look for
- Christmas-Saucon Hall, where the Math Department is located.
- Neville Hall, location of the hour talks, and refreshments.
- Macginnes Hall, where 40-minute talks will be.
