Scholarly Interests and Activities:
My research in structural geology and tectonics focuses on foreland orogenic processes including the geometry and kinematics of crustal structures and tectonite development. The research is increasing multidiciplinary, involving sedimentologists Schmitt-MSU, and Elrick-UNM, geochemist Bebout-Lehigh, geomorphologist Pazzaglia-Lehigh, and paleomagnetist Kodama-Lehigh in recent projects. My scientific approach is quantitative, largely empirical, and involves both field and laboratory data. Recent projects include field areas in the northern US Rocky Mountains, Spanish Pyrenees, and the Sierra Madre Oriental, Mexico. The kinematic studies have involved finite and incremental strain analysis and more recently growth strata analysis, which have and are yielding detailed deformation chronologies. Recent and planned projects incorporate data on surface processes and active tectonics, both hot topics and timely with respect to funding priorities. |
