Folding Processes
in Thrust Belts; NSF (EAR 9017334) funded incremental strain studies (in collaboration with D. Fisher, Penn State and Lehigh students Hedlund and Messina) in the northern Lost River Range, ID of large-scale fault-related fold (fault-bend, fault-propagation, and décollement) kinematics have documented pinned-hinge buckling and progressive limb rotation accommodated by heterogeneous general shear in layer-parallel deformation zones rather than instantaneous limb rotation at spatially-fixed axial surfaces as predicted by current kink folding paradigms (Fisher and Anastasio 1994, Hedlund et al. 1994, Anastasio et al. 1997). |
