Folding Processes in Thrust Belts;
Lost River Range, Idaho

NSF (EAR 9017334) funded incremental strain studies (in collaboration with D. Fisher, Penn State and Lehigh students Hedlund and Messina) in the northern Lost River Range, ID of large-scale fault-related fold (fault-bend, fault-propagation, and décollement) kinematics have documented pinned-hinge buckling and progressive limb rotation accommodated by heterogeneous general shear in layer-parallel deformation zones rather than instantaneous limb rotation at spatially-fixed axial surfaces as predicted by current kink folding paradigms (Fisher and Anastasio 1994, Hedlund et al. 1994, Anastasio et al. 1997).
