SUMMARY OF THE 70th ANNUAL
LEHIGH VALLEY AUDUBON SOCIETY
CHRISTMAS BIRD COUNT

The 2013 Christmas Bird Count was held on Saturday, December 14th.  This was our seventieth year, and National Audubon’s one hundred and fourteenth.  We birded under mostly cloudy skies, with temperatures in the mid-to-upper twenties with snow in the afternoon.  There was a light wind, and still waters were mostly frozen.

We recorded 77 species, totaling just under 35,500 individual birds – which was 3,500 less than last years count. We did established a record number of Lesser Black-backed Gull – 5 (1 in 2010) and tied the record number for Eastern Screech-owl (26), Rufous Hummingbird (1), and Blue-winged Teal (1).

This was my first year as compiler for the count and I thank you all for making it a good one despite the weather. A big thank you to Mark Boyd for his past 10 years of service as compiler and allowing me the opportunity to take over. Count information, and results from 1900 to the present are available through National Audubon’s website at www.christmasbirdcount.org

Thank you to everyone who participated, especially the group leaders, and feeder watchers.  Your promptness in sending in the data is greatly appreciated.  And a special thanks to Betty Abrams and Joanne Sora for putting together the count-off dinner despite the weather and change of location, and thanks to Barbara Malt for hosting it at her house this year. Unfortunately, I was unable to attend this year due to road conditions. Here's to making the 2014 CBC even better!
