SUMMARY OF THE 68th ANNUAL
LEHIGH VALLEY AUDUBON SOCIETY
CHRISTMAS BIRD COUNT

Our 2011 Christmas Bird Count was held on Saturday, December 17.  Temperatures were average; mid twenties for owling, rising to forty in the afternoon – there was little wind.  The sky was shrouded in thick cloud cover throughout the day, making for bad lighting in which to view birds.  All waters were unfrozen.

We recorded 84 species, totaling 49,899 individual birds. Both numbers are below average.  A Ross’s Goose was recorded in area nine, and an Ovenbird was recorded in area six. Both of these species were firsts for our count circle.  Record numbers of four species were established; (previous high, in year) Canada Goose – 29,283 (25,327 in 1984), Mute Swan – 7 (6 in 2005) Bufflehead – 4 (3 in 2008), American Pipit – 203 (75 in 1990).  We also had the second sighting of a Rufous Hummingbird for our count (the other was in 1996).  Although water bird numbers were good, many land bird numbers were down – could this be due to the mild weather up to this date?

Next year the count date will be Saturday, December 15, 2012.  Count information, and results from 1900 to the present are available through National Audubon’s website at www.christmasbirdcount.org

Thank you to everyone who participated, especially the group leaders, and feeder watchers.  Your promptness in sending in the data is greatly appreciated.  Very special thanks to Betty Abrams and Joanne Sora for putting together yet another great count-off dinner.
