The stately old gothic buildings (and some modern ones) on the University of Washington campus sprawl across 694 acres overlooking Lake Washington and just five miles north of downtown Seattle. The Burke Museum on campus is Washington State's museum of natural and cultural history, with an outstanding collection of items from the Northwest, Alaska and the Pacific Rim. Adults $3, seniors $2, kids 6-18 $1.50, kids under 5 free. An interesting gift shop sells affordable jewelry, prints, books, etc. along with neat nature stuff for kids. The Washington Park Aboretum is about a mile east of the University on Lake Washington Blvd E. It consists of 200 acres of plants from around the world-a perfect place fro a stroll anytime of the year-and it's free!
The Japanese Tea Garden in the Southeast corner of the Arboretum is an authentic oriental garden that soothes and refreshes visitors. $2.50 per person. Telephone: (206) 684-4725
The role of Discovery Park is to provide an open space of quiet and tranquillity away from the stress and activity of the city, a sanctuary for wildlife, as well as an outdoor classroom for people to learn about the natural world. Maintained in its semi-natural condition, the park will continue to offer a biologically rich and diverse natural area for urban dwellers and an unmatched opportunity for enviromental education.
