Work/Life Balance for Faculty
Lehigh is committed to helping faculty members balance the responsibilities of their professional and private lives. The ever changing demands, and the university's efforts to face these challenges, have evolved over the past decade and continue into the future as we work for greater flexibility in the tenure clock and faculty careers.
Working and Living in the Lehigh Valley
A little more than an hour's car ride from Philadelphia or New York City, Lehigh University is located within the thriving economic and cultural corridor of the eastern United States. Serviced by several major highways and the Lehigh Valley International Airport, the Lehigh Valley region of eastern Pennsylvania is comprised of Lehigh and Northampton Counties and is the location of Allentown, Bethlehem and Easton, as well as numerous townships and boroughs.
Allentown
Founded in 1762 by William Allen, a successful businessman and former mayor of Philadelphia, Allentown is the largest of the three cities. Allentown is known for its award-winning parks system, the Allentown Band—the oldest civilian concert band in the country, and for hiding the Liberty Bell from the British from 1777 to 1778 in the basement of a church. It is also home to amusement and water park Dorney Park & Wildwater Kingdom, the Da Vinci Science Center, and the Mayfair Festival of the Arts. Cedar Crest College and Muhlenberg College are located in Allentown’s west end. For more information about Allentown, please visit http://www.allentownpa.gov/.
Bethlehem
Known as “Christmas City U.S.A.,” Bethlehem was founded by members of the Moravian Church in 1741. The downtown area is home to many original 1700s and early 1800s structures including a water works, tannery, and grain mill, as well as Moravian College. Today the city is known for its many annual festivals including Musikfest, the Celtic Classic, and Christkindlmarkt. The city’s Southside features eclectic restaurants, shops, and art galleries, the Banana Factory—a community arts center, and the campus of Lehigh University. Easton
Easton is located in the eastern end of the Lehigh Valley along the New Jersey state border. Founded in 1752 by Thomas Penn, the city sits at the convergence of the Delaware and Lehigh Rivers. Centre Square is a hub of activity with weekly farmers markets, trendy restaurants, art galleries and antique shops. Families flock to the Crayola FACTORY®, the National Canal Museum, and the State Theatre Center for the Arts. The campus of Lafayette College is also located in the College Hill neighborhood of Easton. For more information about Easton, please visit http://www.easton-pa.com/.
