As a participant in the WIRED Program, there are a number of things which you need to know regarding what you can and cannot do with your network connection. This document outlines these.
Utilization of your network connection, along with the utilization of any other L&TS computing equipment, is governed by the policies set forth in the document entitled Policies on the Use of Computer Systems and Facilities. The policy is also available for reference on the World-Wide Web at www/lehigh.edu/security/computepolicy.html. Connections to networks external to the University are governed by acceptable use policies of those networks.
Additional policies pertaining to your WIRED network connection are as follows:
You are personally responsible for all use of your computer and network connection and you will be held accountable for any violations that occur involving your computer and/or network connection. You should only allow others to use your computer with the full understanding of the consequences of such actions.
You are personally responsible for installing all security patches (especially Critical Updates) that may become available for your operating system. Enable Automatic Updates and firewall where applicable.
Antivirus software must be installed and maintained for all applicable operating systems.
Granting access to Lehigh University resources to individuals external to the University through your network connection is prohibited.
You will not use your network connection for personal or financial gain.
You will not generate excessive network traffic (for example, daily local traffic in excess of 1GB or daily off-campus traffic in excess of .5GB). Throughput for violators will be automatically, temporarily reduced.
As a WIRED participant, you are authorized to connect a single computer to a single network wall jack.
The network may not be altered or extended. Personal wireless access points are prohibited.
You will not attempt to masquerade as another user or another computer nor attempt to monitor, redirect or disrupt network traffic. You will not port scan other computers.
You will not register any non-Lehigh.EDU domain name as pointing to a Lehigh IP (Internet Protocol) address.
It is required that you use DHCP (Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol) for all software configurations, and you will not use any IP address except that assigned by DHCP; this address may change as required by DHCP.
LTS reserves the right to place enhancements and links to WIRED administrative tools on your computer.
All servers (World-Wide Web, ftp, etc.) must be approved by LTS prior to implementation. Students who administer computers that are used as servers accept full responsibility for server content and any violations involving that server which occur. Mail servers will NOT be approved!
The distribution of MP3 and other digital audio/video files, as well as the use of copyrighted images, is forbidden without written consent of the copyright owner. Copyright infringement is illegal!
Since failure to comply with applicable acceptable use policies may be a violation of law and could result in criminal prosecution, if you are in doubt as to whether or not to do something either don't do it or contact LTS first to ensure that you comply with University policies and legal requirements.
Participants of the WIRED Program must also agree to abide by all pertinent policies related to the use of networking at Lehigh University, as outlined by the Lehigh Computing policy.
