About the 2007 Symposium

Titled “A Celebration of Research and Its Global Impact,” Lehigh University's 2007 academic symposium was held in honor of the inauguration of Alice P. Gast as Lehigh's 13th president.

As master of ceremonies Robert Thornton noted, the symposium began with a Nobel laureate and ended with a poet laureate. In between came a National Medal of Science winner in brain research, the president of the American Academy of Religion, and a leading scholar in globalization.

The diverse presentations at the daylong event were tied together by common threads, according to Gast, who said in her concluding remarks: Each of the speakers brought “messages of inquiry, questioning and hope.”

The symposium, held in Lehigh's Zoellner Arts Center's Baker Hall, featured five internationally renowned scholars as keynote speakers -- Horst Stormer, The I. I. Rabi Professor of Physics and Professor of Applied Physics in the Department of Physics at Columbia University; Ann Graybiel, the Walter A. Rosenblith Professor of Neuroscience in the department of brain and cognitive sciences and the McGovern Institute for Brain Research at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology; Jeffrey Stout, professor in the department of religion at Princeton University; Arjun Appadurai, the John Dewey Professor in the Social Sciences and senior advisor for Global Initiatives at The New School in New York City; and Mark Strand, professor in the department of English and comparative literature at Columbia University. Throughout the day, an exhibition of research conducted by undergraduate and graduate students was on display in the lobby outside.

It has been through the unwavering dedication and exceptional leadership of the following faculty and staff that has made An Exhibition of Student Research a reality: Daniel Lopresti, Computer Science and Engineering, Keith Schray, Chemistry, Shin-Yi Chou, Economics, George DuPaul, Education and Human Services, Himanshu Jain, Materials Science and Engineering, Wojciech Misiolek, Materials Science and Engineering, Eileen Gorzelic, Executive Secretary to the Provost.
