Lehigh in Spain

Program Overview:

Dr. Linda Lefkowitz from Lehigh University’s Modern Languages department will lead this intensive 3-week study program to two important areas of Spain:  Castilla la Mancha (Madrid and Central Spain) and Andalusia, the center of one of the most highly developed civilizations of the Middle Ages.  This is the sixth time a Winter Term in Spain is offered at Lehigh.  The course will be taught in English and “survival Spanish” will be offered to novices.

Program Location:

The group will travel to four important cities in Spain: Madrid, Toledo, Cordoba, and Seville.  We spend four days in Madrid, the capitol of Spain, located right in the center of the peninsula.  The group is lodged in a centrally located Hotel, within easy walking distance of the main cultural attractions.  These are the world-famous Prado museum, the Museum of Queen Sofía which houses the famous painting of Picasso know as the Guernica, the Royal Palace, the Bernabeu soccer stadium which houses the Real Madrid soccer club, and the Plaza Mayor (the main square).  There is a one-day excursion to Toledo, in the eleventh century the capital of Spain and current capital of the Autonomous Community called Castilla-La Mancha. It is 70 kilometers (43 miles) south of Madrid.  Toledo has been declared a World Heritage city by the UNESCO.  In the past, Toledo was host to Christian, Islamic, and Jewish culture and this is reflected in its streets and monuments.  Here, besides a spectacular Cathedral, and two remaining synagogues, we will see the very famous painting of El Greco called the Burial of the Count of Orgaz.  In Seville where we will be housed with Spanish families, time is spent learning in the classroom and “on the street”.  Besides visiting the many monuments and major landmarks of this capital of the Autonomous Community of Andalusia, which includes the third largest Gothic cathedral in the world, right next to a Moorish palace, we will also experience such cultural attractions as dancing and singing of Sevillanas, Flamenco dance and song, the New Year’s Eve eating of the grapes, the parade that commemorates Three Kings Day where you will get showered with candy, and of course the late night life enjoyed by people your own age. There will be an excursion to the 2nd. Century A.D. Roman city of Itálica, which are the best preserved Roman ruins in the country. Finally, we will also visit the great Mosque of Córdoba with a Cathedral built right in its center!
