The Lehigh in Shanghai: English Teaching Practicum will take place on the campus of Lehigh’s partner institution, East China University of Science and Technology (ECUST). Up to 5 Lehigh students who function as pre-service English teachers will be selected to accompany Dr. Timothy Cauller, Associate Director of English as a Second Language at Lehigh University. This 4-week teaching practicum is designed to provide hands-on classroom practice teaching English to Chinese university students. Working closely with ECUST faculty members, Lehigh in Shanghai: English Teaching Practicum participants will observe English classes and teach classes 3-4 days per week in speaking, writing, reading, listening, and American culture.
New for 2014! Dr. Cauller will be joined by three Lehigh ESL faculty members who will combine efforts to mentor the Lehigh Practicum teachers. Extensive individualized feedback on lesson planning, classroom teaching techniques, and building a professional teaching persona will be provided throughout the Practicum. Dr. Cauller will also lead a weekly debriefing to discuss and reflect on the group’s teaching experiences and adaptation to life in China.
Practicum participants will live on-campus in an ECUST residence hall, eat in ECUST dining halls, and study Mandarin Chinese in group lessons 6 hours per week, focusing on survival communication skills and China’s rich cultural background. An extended weekend excursion to Beijing or similar city with an ECUST faculty guide is included in the Practicum fee.
