Filtering mail in IMP
Blacklisting email from a certain address
If you want to automatically delete email from a certain address, and you
already have a message from that email address, you can set up a filter
just by clicking the 'Blacklist' link when you are viewing the message.
The Filter Rules page will come up and you will see that a Filtering
Rule has been added that will 'Delete messages where the From: field contains'
the email address.
Click on the Apply All Rules button and the message and anything else
from the same email address in your inbox will be marked as deleted. To
remove them entirely, click on the Purge Deleted link in the upper left
corner.
Setting up a general filter
To add a filter that filters based on some other characteristic of the
mail than the FROM line, click on Options.
In the Mail Management Column, choose Filters.
Click on the link to Edit Filter Rules.
In the Rule Definition section of the page:
-
In the Field line, choose the field to filter by (for instance, to filter
messages with [SPAM] in the subject line, click Subject)
-
In the Text line, enter the text you want the filter to look for (for instance
[SPAM])
-
Choose the the Action-- in general, you will choose 'Delete message' to
remove messages, but you can also have those messages automatically put
into a folder.
-
Click the Create button.
What happens
The next time you go into your IMP mailbox and new mail is brought into
the mailbox, the filters will be applied to the incoming mail. Messages
which have the characteristics you asked it to filter for will be marked
as deleted. You may want to quickly look over the items marked as deleted
To remove them entirely, click on the Purge Deleted link in the upper left
corner.
