The CIH virus infects executable files and is spread by executing an infected file. Since many files are executed during normal use of a computer, the CIH virus can infect many files quickly.
The CIH virus comes in many strains: some activate on the 26th of April, some on the 26th of June and some on the 26th of every month. If activated, the virus is almost sure to wipe out your hard drive and in some instances your flash BIOS. Some computers may require new BIOS chips while most will require hard drive reformatting.
Common anti-virus software will detect the CIH virus and remove it prior
to activation. Once activated, little can be done as far as recovering data.
