Nursing Opportunities in ROTC

If nursing is your professional goal, there is no better place to begin your career than in Army ROTC. Army ROTC offers you a unique opportunity to gain practical experience, and potentially receive financial assistance for college.  You have chosen a demanding profession. Medical emergencies require a cool head and clear thinking. Making the most of your skills, building a sense of confidence, and helping you realize your leadership and management potential are what the Army ROTC is all about.  As a ROTC nursing student, you will be able to combine college electives in military science and invaluable nurse summer training experience with your regular nursing program. You will develop your professional skills while you learn some meaningful things about yourself and what you can accomplish.

Upon completion of the program (and provided all prerequisites are met), you will receive a commission as an active or reserve officer in the Army Nurse Corps, ready to take on the challenges of your profession. You will find that your Army ROTC experience has taken you a long way toward realizing your professional goals.

Students who are interested in pursuing a Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) program with the Steel Battalion may enroll in Army ROTC though any of our participating Nursing schools.  The schools include DeSales University, Moravian College, Kutztown University, Cedar Crest College, and Alvernia College.  Those students attending Northampton Community College or Lehigh Carbon Community College who are pursing their RN and wish to continue towards a BSN may also participate. Students can enroll as a freshman, sophomore, or, in some cases, as late as their junior year in college. Upon completion of the program, students are commissioned as officers in the Army Nurse Corps.

The Army Nurse Experience

After graduation you will be commissioned as a second lieutenant in the Army Nurse Corps. You will attend the Army Medical Department Officer Basic Course at Ft. Sam Houston, Texas en-route to your first clinical assignment as an Army Nurse. The active duty commitment is four years for scholarship recipients, three for non-scholarship. Upon completion of your active duty requirement, you will then have the option to exit active duty while completing the remainder of your eight year commitment in the National Guard, Army Reserves or the inactive Ready Reserves.

After just one year at your initial assignment, you may have the opportunity to attend a clinical specialty course in one of the following areas:

  • Operating Room Nursing
  • Critical Care Nursing
  • Psychiatric/Mental Nursing
  • Maternal/Child Health Nursing

Scholarships

Every year, the Army offers four, three, and two year dedicated nursing scholarships to nursing students in the Steel Battalion.  The scholarships cover full tuition and fees, $900 per year for books, and a $300 - $500 per month stipend. Nurses receive a Littman stethoscope at the beginning of their junior year and a personal digital assistant (PDA) loaded with drug information in their senior year. NCLEX review courses and the NCLEX exam fees are also reimbursed.
