PREFERRED ACTIVITIES

Important Considerations

Preferred activity interventions can be viewed as curricular modifications. What you’re asking is, “What can be changed or modified within the limits of the lesson in order to incorporate elements of the student’s preference?”

When using preferred activities to change student behavior make sure the preferences are based on specific information gathered from the student.

A preference in one context may not be a preference in another. For example, Dejuana prefers to use a pencil instead of a pen when doing written work, but prefers neither when doing a connect-the-dots worksheet, because she dislikes doing the worksheets.
