CHOICE
Using Choice to get students to do their work, and like it too!

Choice refers to giving a student, or even a class, a selection of assignments, activities, or rewards in order to increase the student’s motivation to complete what is asked of him or her. Choice works because it allows the student(s) to participate in the decision making process and thus feel more in control of the environment. Students will also typically choose items, assignments, or activities that they like in some way, and are therefore more likely to participate. What is great about using choice as an intervention is that instead of the student having to behave inappropriately to gain control over a situation, you are able to provide the student the opportunity to make decisions while still maintaining control. This makes choice an ideal intervention for students who engage in problem behavior to gain control.
