NSF CyberSEES Grant

Lehigh's PORT Lab is the recipient of a $900,000 grant from the National Science Foundation Cyber-Innovation for Sustainability Science and Engineering (CyberSEES) program. Their project, entitled "Ocean Wave Energy and the Power Grid: Optimization and Integration," studies sensing, prediction, optimization, and control techniques for arrays of ocean wave energy conversion devices to make them reliable, efficient, economical, and environmentally benign. The project is part of a broader Lehigh effort focused on harnessing hydrokinetic energy for conversion into usable electricity. This grant was part of a larger effort to develop a sustainable society using computer science and information technology.

Outreach and Workforce Development

PORT Lab's CyberSEES grant provides funds to support outreach and workforce development efforts conducted by Lehigh faculty and students. These include a week-long course on wave energy for high-school students at the Bermuda Institute of Ocean Sciences (BIOS), as well as the development of an exhibit about wave energy at the Da Vinci Science Center. PORT Lab researchers are partnering with Lehigh's Sustainable Development program on these activities.

The article touches on topics such as complex interactions between WEC's, the place of wireless research in ocean energy, and integration of desalination technologies in wave farms.
