One
of the objectives of Academic Outreach is to provide the
community with extensive K-12 educational programs. Below
is a brief summary of each program with links to their respective
sites:

High School Scholars
The High School Scholars program provides the opportunity
for qualified and motivated high school students to take
college level courses during their senior year at Lehigh
University. Rising seniors are nominated by local high schools. The qualified students, selected by the Outreach Department, may take one course each semester at the university tuition free.

Lehigh
Valley Science and Engineering Fair
The purpose of the Science and Engineering Fair is
to increase awareness in the areas of mathematics, science,
technology, and engineering, and motivate area students in grade
6-12 to pursue careers in these fields. Sponsored
by Lehigh University and Insaco, Inc., the
fair is held once a year in Rauch Fieldhouse at Lehigh University
and has approximately 550 participants each year. Winners
have the opportunity to participate in the Delaware
Valley Fair and potentially, the International
Science and Engineering Fair

S.T.A.R. Academies
In the fall of 1989, Lehigh University welcomed 20 teacher-nominated
students from Broughal Middle School to the first session
of the S.T.A.R. Academy. Fifteen years later, the S.T.A.R.
Academies (Students That Are Ready) has expanded to approximately
one hundred students with many innovative sessions and programs
that are designed to develop our students intellectually,
socially, spiritually, and emotionally in order that they
will become productive citizens in our society. The S.T.A.R.
Academy is made possible through a partnership of Lehigh
University, participating school districts, area businesses
and organizations, parents and college students, who serve
as volunteer mentors/tutors

S.T.E.M.
Project
STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math) puts graduate
and undergraduate college students in grade four through
twelve classrooms where they help to teach hands-on lessons
about science, technology, engineering and math. Teachers,
students, professors and industry partners work together
to create real world applications that fit into each classroom's
curriculum. STEM is a project of Lehigh University funded
by a grant from the National Science Foundation.

Bridging the Gap: Other Outreach Programs
Many of our Lehigh faculty and staff have developed their own outreach programs. Howeverm, in many cases, the only people that know about these programs are those involved. The office of Academic Outreach has compiled a list of these other programs in an attempt to bridge this gap.

Launch IT (Information Technology)
The Launch-IT Project will launch Lehigh Valley students towards careers in Information Technology (IT). Sponsored by the National Science Foundation (NSF) and the Pennsylvania Infrastructure Technology Alliance (PITA) and hosted at Lehigh University. This project is for middle school students who may be considered at-risk and may not be exposed to college. Launch-IT students will learn how to design exciting software successful "real world" IT professionals, improve skills with the help of the art educational software, get one-on-one tutoring from expert teachers and college students, and get a head start on college and career opportunities in Information Technology.
