Fraternity Furniture Procedures

In an effort to abide by the Strengthening Greek Life Task Force recommendations that the university provide bedroom furniture to all fraternities, provide the residents of our fraternity houses as much flexibility as possible, and also recognize that over the years fraternity residents have developed a unique and personalized lifestyle, the Office of Residential Services shall implement the following:

Desks, Dressers, Wardrobes
The university will provide a desk, a desk chair, a dresser, and a wardrobe to every fraternity bedroom where there is no built-in furniture. Rooms that currently have built-in dressers and wardrobes have been evaluated by Facilities Services staff, in consultation with an expert carpenter, to assess current conditions. Those built-in units that cannot be restored will be replaced. All furniture repairs and new furniture installation will be completed by the start of the fall 2005 semester.

Bedroom Window Coverings
The university will install room darkening mini-blinds in all fraternity bedrooms as window coverings. These mini-blinds will become part of the inventory for each bedroom.

Beds/Mattresses

• Each fraternity resident will have the option of requesting a residential bed to be installed in his bedroom. The bed will be a single bed with adjustable heights similar to ones currently located in M&M, Dravo, and Lower Centennials. A mattress will also be provided.
• This spring, and every spring hereafter, fraternity residents will have the ability to sign a waiver stating that the fraternity brother chooses to take responsibility for providing his own bed/mattress (e.g., single bed, double bed, futon) rather than the university provided one. Any fraternity member who does not sign this waiver will have a university supplied bed/mattress delivered to his room prior to the start of the academic year and is responsible for that bed being in his room at the close of the academic year. In order to help keep track of all university and personal furniture and to reduce loss of personal property, only university supplied furniture will remain in the rooms at the close of the academic year.
• If fraternity residents choose to supply their beds, they may choose to construct lofts to raise their beds. Loft construction must follow Òloft guidelinesÓ available in Residential Services. As noted above, only university furniture will remain in rooms at the close of the academic year.
• Students who choose not to remove their personal bed/futon and/or constructed loft, or personal items at the end of the academic year will be financially responsible for the removal and disposal of their personal items left behind and may be subject to additional lease violation penalties.
• We are hoping to be able to offer these options to students for years to come. However, these privileges require mutual cooperation between the university and the fraternity residents. Should residents abuse these privileges (e.g. continually leave behind lofts, personal beds and other property) the university may work to change this process. If residents choose to forgo these privileges by abusing them, the university would then provide all students with a single bed and mattress and the students will lose the flexibility of bringing or building their own.

Capacity Review/Room Set-Ups
Capacity reviews of each fraternity and sorority have been evaluated and each fraternity and sorority has been informed as to what their new capacity for fall 2005 will be. All bedrooms will be provided with the appropriate amount of furniture per the capacity of the bedroom.

• All doubles will be set as doubles, even if there is only one resident residing in the room. All singles will be set as singles.
• A house may request additional furniture to be installed to accommodate more residents than capacity allows as long as housing codes are not exceeded. But please keep in mind that furniture may not be removed from the room during the academic year should the occupancy change.
• It is the residentÕs responsibility in each bedroom to remove all personal property at the end of each academic year. To ensure that the university keep track of all university and personal furniture and in order to reduce loss of personal property, only university supplied furniture will remain in the rooms at the close of the academic year
